Why the forum?

Greetings,

I'm somewhat new to forums, and as I was wondering what to write, I wondered what people would be interested in. This led me to think about forums in general, and why people came to them, and furthermore, what the individuals here thought about their visits.

What do they hope to gain? Do they gain it? What are they tired of, and not looking for? I suppose questions can be easy, and answers can be more difficult, but of course it depends.

Anyway, I would be interested to find out a bit more about the community, and of course I'd be glad to share a bit about myself.

I am here because I find religion strange.

I wonder why some people believe such strange things, but I don't know a lot of religious people whom I can ask.
So I ask my questions here.

I like the forum because the majority of people here actually try to answer the questions you ask. There are some morons around, but usually they get banned quite quickly.

I also like the strange question people ask that make me think about why I believe the things I believe. I am not religious, but even non-religious people have a vorld view. Some things you just take for granted and never wonder why and sometimes people say things that chalenge the way I see the world.
I like that.

Welcome to the forum, may your time here be interesting :)

I am here because much can be learned from discussion and even debate. Improving your Self is an eternal journey, and this just helps along at some times. However, there are the same problems here as elsewhere, which is people can be stubborn, ignorant, and closed-minded. Not to mention that many can be overly ego-driven, and everybody at least has off days.

I like this experience though. I have learned a lot in the few months that I have been here, especially about my own beliefs. The DIRs are very good for connecting with people of similar ideas and strengthening those ideas. I thoroughly enjoy it.

forums are great because you can discuss issues that you wouldn't be able to very easily in real life.

no one can shout each other down or just change the subject.

also you can put forward views that in the real world could have negative consequences - here, one can just keep moving forward.

Thanks for replying.

Yes, I suppose it's a mixture of satisfying curiosity, dialogue or just conversation, a certain wish to share things, validate things, and sometimes to show off, proselytize etc. People, of course, have different expectations, motives, perhaps even an "agenda". It all goes into the mix. Perhaps being part of an online community brings some satisfaction of some sort, perhaps it makes a large contribution to a person's life, perhaps it is just an aside.

But I'm also wondering: do people feel that these activities really bring them further on in life, or is it only wasting time? Is it about changing one's beliefs over time, or acquiring different knowledge and points of view, or does it lead one to action of one sort or another? I think it's nice to learn about this and that, but it can lead to a kind of passivity, resignation, can't it?

Thank you zenzero, what a warm welcome.

Just reading some of the recent posts, I can see that there is a great variety of members here, and that perhaps things do not always go as well as some of them would like. I suppose with internet forums it can be tempting to take certain liberties that one would not necessarily take in the regular community. Still, it all offers a chance for learning!

What do they hope to gain?
A nice hour spent after a long day, with a cup of coffee, discussing religion, culture, and politics with people from around the world.
Do they gain it?
Sometimes. there's plenty of positive interaction and bonds. some people hit it off, even on an internet forum.
What are they tired of, and not looking for?
Preaching. why your religion (or world view) is right for others. plagiarizing. flame baits.
I suppose questions can be easy, and answers can be more difficult, but of course it depends.
You are correct. some people need to think hard on how to make more honest and constructive questions. I believe the fastest way to realize how to is understand that there is an intelligent reader on the other side, who has probably seen any form of trolling the internet has to offer before.
Anyway, I would be interested to find out a bit more about the community, and of course I'd be glad to share a bit about myself.
Welcome to RF, I hope you find what you are looking to get out of on line discussion.

Empiricism is a logical fallacy, my friend. :)
And if those dang pagans are us, you are welcome haha.

religion is one of the biggies...everyone has a different experience and take on it.

I come here to learn and engage others in this subject. I have learned so much already that I dont really have access to in the normal course of my day. Where can I talk to a Buddhist, a practicing Hindu, learn Zen, discuss the origin of life....all in one day.

Greetings,

Yes, it's good to hear and see that people find a space in which to share their views and learn from others, with a certain freedom and protection. While I do not have much experience with online communities, I can imagine that many of the positive and negative aspects of regular society become transferred and transformed into the online society.

I agree, Caladan, that it is very worthwhile to assume and start with the idea that the other is an intelligent respondent.

Its only a Label
Friend antonjarrod,

A conscious being is one who is flexible and finds the need to balance, to fill in the gaps to shed the extra baggage and all that is needed for that balance.
Forums are like the clubs where RF is like a monastery along side a club.:D:D:D

Personally am not aware who runs RF and how it is managed; but surely am personally grateful for the opportunity it provides for humans on earth to interact freely BUT only in a healthy manner.

So, if you have an open mind to find a balance within and without RF is a gr8 place!
Simply learn to enjoy.

Love & rgds
