Why the Ten Commandments but not the Ten Commandments?

The Book of Exodus describes two different sets of ten commandments handed down from God:

The Ten Commandments from Exodus 20 still have major prominence in most Christian denominations, but the Ten Commandments from Exodus 34 generally do not. What I'm wondering is why?

- both are described as being given directly by God
- both are described as covenants between God and His chosen people
- (AFAIK) there is no mention in the Bible of anything that renders either one no longer applicable

So... why is it that keeping the Sabbath holy is still considered mandatory, but not keeping the Feast of Weeks or prohibiting your sons from marrying unbelievers?

Because the second set of commandments you referenced are part of the Mosaic Law. Christians do not live the Mosaic Law because Christ fulfilled this law and brought the Law of the gospel. Christians live the Law of the Gospel. You should be asking Jews about the second set of commandments. They have no relevence to me as a Christian other than to see what the Mosaic law consisted of.

That's all fine, but how does that reasoning not apply equally to the Exodus 20 Ten Commandments?

What makes the Exodus 34 set part of Mosaic Law but the Exodus 20 set not?

I don't see any reason not to follow the Ten Commandments. They are good guidelines for we who follow and read the Bible. The last 6 deal with murder, adultery, bearing false witness and so on. People who are of no religion or faith, still follow these kinds of rules.

not a single stroke shall fall away from the law until...oh hell let me copy and paste

Matthew 5:18
"For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished.

penguin,
The complete Ten Commandments are listed only at Ex 20 and Deut 5,
The Ten Commandments were called The Ten Words, Deut 11:22.
The Ten commandments were just the most important part of the Mosaic Law Covenant. The whole law was written throughout the first five books of the Bible, called The Pentateuch, also called The Torah, and the Mitzvah. The whole Mosaic Law Covenant consisted of 613 laws. All had to be obeyed, many with the penalty of death.
The Mosaic Law Covenant was to be an interim, or de bene esse covenant, meaning that it was only to be in force until the Messiah came, Jesus, Jere 31:31-34.
Paul showed the law was fulfilled at Heb 8:6-13 and 10:14-18.
The Mosaic Law Covenant was superceded by the New Covenant, that Jesus innstituted on thhe night before his death, at the Lord's Evening Meal, or Last Supper, Matt 26:26-28, Luke 22:19,20, 1Cor 11:23-26. This New Covenant was based on the shed blood of Jesus, which made the New Covenant musch superior to the Mosaic Law Covenant, which was based on the blood of goats and bulls, Heb 9:11-15, 7:11,12,18-25.
At the death of Jesus the Mosaic Law became OBSOLETE, Heb 8:13, Col 2:13,14, Gal 3:24,25.
After Jesus came and gave his life for men there was no more reason for the Law, Heb 10:14,18. Everyone who had faith was looked upon by God as perfect, because Jesus had given his life as a propituitory sacrifice, 1John 2:1,2,4:9,10, Rom 5:8,9.
No one could be completely forgiven of his sins with the blood of goats and bulls, but with Jesus sacrifice anyone who had faith in his ransom sacrifice could be declared righteous, Acts 13:38,39, Rom 3:23,24, Gal 2:16,21, John 3:16.
Christians are not under the Mosaic Law Covenant, they never have been. The mosaic Law was only for the Israelites, Jews, Deut 5:1-3, Ps 147:19,20, Deut 4:6-8, Rom 2:14, 6:14,15, 1Cor 9:20- If the Mosaic Law was still in force Paul, who was a Jew would have been under it. The Mosaic Law Covenant actually was a curse to all those under it beause it condemned to death all who did not obey it perfectly, Gal 3:10-14, 5:2-4, James 2:10, 2Cor 3:6,7, Rom 7:6, Acts 15:10,11.

So, then, why are the Ten Commandments still emphasized and considered in effect by most Christians?

LDS-Christians believe the ten commandments are still in effect because they are contained in all of our scriptures. We also believe they are still in effect becasue Modern Prophets continue to tell us of their importance.

They are in the Old Testament.

Exodus 20:2-17
2 I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:
5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;
6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
7 Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:
10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
12 ¶ Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
13 Thou shalt not kill.
14 Thou shalt not commit adultery.
15 Thou shalt not steal.
16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.
17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ***, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.

The Ten Commandment can also be found in the New Testament. There are parts in Matthew 5. There is also a close grouping is found in:

Romans 13:9
9 For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

The Ten Commandments were also given to the people of the Book of Mormon.

Mosiah 12:34-37
34 I am the Lord thy God, who hath brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
35 Thou shalt have no other God before me.
36 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing in heaven above, or things which are in the earth beneath.
37 Now Abinadi said unto them, Have ye done all this? I say unto you, Nay, ye have not. And have ye taught this people that they should do all these things? I say unto you, Nay, ye have not.

Mosiah 13:12-24
12 And now, ye remember that I said unto you: Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of things which are in heaven above, or which are in the earth beneath, or which are in the water under the earth.
13 And again: Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them; for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquities of the fathers upon the children, unto the third and fourth generations of them that hate me;
14 And showing mercy unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments.
15 Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
16 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
17 Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work;
18 But the seventh day, the sabbath of the Lord thy God, thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy man-servant, nor thy maid-servant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates;
19 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is; wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
20 Honor thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
21 Thou shalt not kill.
22 Thou shalt not commit adultery. Thou shalt not steal.
23 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
24 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s wife, nor his man-servant, nor his maid-servant, nor his ox, nor his ***, nor anything that is thy neighbor’s.

The Ten Commandments were also given through modern Prophets in our time. They can be found throughout the Doctrine and Covenants.

D&C 42:18-29
18 And now, behold, I speak unto the church. Thou shalt not kill; and he that kills shall not have forgiveness in this world, nor in the world to come.
19 And again, I say, thou shalt not kill; but he that killeth shall die.
20 Thou shalt not steal; and he that stealeth and will not repent shall be cast out.
21 Thou shalt not lie; he that lieth and will not repent shall be cast out.
22 Thou shalt love thy wife with all thy heart, and shalt cleave unto her and none else.
23 And he that looketh upon a woman to lust after her shall deny the faith, and shall not have the Spirit; and if he repents not he shall be cast out.
24 Thou shalt not commit adultery; and he that committeth adultery, and repenteth not, shall be cast out.
25 But he that has committed adultery and repents with all his heart, and forsaketh it, and doeth it no more, thou shalt forgive;
26 But if he doeth it again, he shall not be forgiven, but shall be cast out.
27 Thou shalt not speak evil of thy neighbor, nor do him any harm.
28 Thou knowest my laws concerning these things are given in my scriptures; he that sinneth and repenteth not shall be cast out.
29 If thou lovest me thou shalt serve me and keep all my commandments.

Also all prophets since Joseph Smith have continued to tell us the importance of these commandments.

There are, in fact, scores of commandments listed in Exodus, Leviticus, and Deuteronomy but only the well known 10 are required of Gentiles.
Yes, but what I'm asking is why? What makes those commandments different?

I've heard Christians tell me that the Ten Commandments (i.e. the Exodus 20 version) are still in effect because they were given directly from God... but so were the other Ten Commandments (i.e. the Exodus 34 version).

One set becomes a huge part of many Christians' beliefs and the other set is largely ignored; most Christian denominations "keep the Sabbath holy" in one form or another, but I know of none that "keep the Feast of Weeks". Still, I can't see any justification for keeping the one set that doesn't apply to the other. Actually, in my reading of the New Testament, it seems to me like neither set would still be in effect for Christians... but still, people cry out for one set to be put up in courthouses while virtually nobody mentions the other set at all.
