Why would you put another member on ignore?

Sgt. Pepper

All you need is love.
I have two people on ignore. One of them is on ignore because of their incoherent responses, and the other is on ignore because the staff requested that I put this person on ignore. I've been tempted to put a couple of other rude members on ignore due to their obnoxious behavior, but I haven't done so yet.

Even if such a person is mistaken in all regards, I'd never suggest ignoring someone because of a philosophical difference. If your ideas are correct, wouldn't you want to prove how correct they are by exposing them to every contrary argument imaginable?

Generally yes. But it was a quite unusual case. We wouldn't agree on even the smallest of things.

It got to the point where if one of us brought any citation we would disagree on how to interpret the citation.

He insisted that reality could only be aprehended (I might not remembering the exact term) through mystical experiences. I kept saying he had no basis to make that claim. So we disagreed on how to establish what is real.

He often used eastern scriptures as authoritative and I simply rejected it.

Eventually, every single interaction between us was just a hassle and annoying. Maybe nowadays I wouldn't have put him on ignore. It was like.... 8 years ago. I didn't have as much... patience.

Okay. Yeah. That kind of exchange seems rather vacuous. I don't blame you for moving on because it seems like the exchange became about superficial differences (rather than meaningful ones). I say it is within a person's right to assert Hindu (or whatever) scriptural support as "authoritative" if they think that is true.

But once it is established that that the authority of such a source is not recognized mutually, it is rude and unproductive to continue to employ such devices in discourse.

I faintly remember one interaction where one of us brought up cogito ergo sum. And he said it means that once we stop thinking we cease to exist and therefore we don't truly exist... or something like that. As in that is Descarte's own interpretation of it...

Do you have any members of RF on your ignore list? What are your criteria or reasonings for putting someone there.

This morning, I received a message from a fellow member. They informed me that I am now on their ignore list.

It felt rather unprovoked, I don't think I ever offended them or something. I always got the feeling they didn't like me though due to their constant dismissive attitude towards me, which I guess I was right.

I have one person on ignore. I'm pretty sure they are literally senile because they would flood my threads with pages of incoherent gibberish. Seeing literal gibberish fill up more than half my browser page was frustrating, and made me worry about the member. So they are ignored.

Other than that, I haven't found a good reason to ignore anyone else. What about you?

I have never used ignore, nor do I forsee me ever using it. If I had an issue with someone I would simply not respond to any reply they make to my posts. Most folks move on if you do not engage.

There's nothing you can say that can't be said.
No incoherent response that can't be incoherent-ed.
The answer is unclear. But it might be clear in time.
It's easy.

I haven't used the function yet. I've come close only a couple times. I come here to either enjoy a little interaction with others or out of curiosity. If someone doesn't agree with me it's no big deal. I've not taken anything personal and haven't had any real personal attacks. Crap, I would buy anyone here a beer, coffee, tea or whatever they drink, even the folks I strongly disagree with on many things.

I suppose the ignore function is always there, just in case.

I don't have anyone on ignore, but there are some people I scroll past when I see their posts - namely folks who just post nonsensical gibberish. If folks have a hot take that I don't like or agree with, I still wanna see it. I'm not too good to eat my popcorn while I watch an entire thread devolve into petty name calling and low blows

Ignore you!? You've got some of the most interesting posts, imo!

I had one on ignore because their posts made me feel mildly ill. I don't need that in my life. The person has since left, so I now have zero.

I have a dozen or so people on ignore.
One for posting walls of text that have no consistency like from a bad chat bot.
A few because they explicitly refused to communicate in a civil manner.
The rest because I suspect them to have flagged my posts. Every time I get a warning that I don't find justified, someone joins my ignore list.

No one on ignore.

I don’t report or ignore. Though I may have toggled someone on ignore and then off again immediately to see how the function worked (I can’t be certain I did this, but it seems like something I would do).

I have only known one poster to ever ignore or threaten to ignore me. I imagine others may have ignored me without my knowledge. I would rather have ppl ignore me or others than leave RF. So, I am glad the function exists.

I've never had anyone on ignore, given that my memory is still good enough to know when not to comment on the threads or comments of some, and where I usually do refrain - given that commenting, discussing, or arguing with them is usually pointless. I'm sure I do make some annoyed or whatever and they are welcome to put me on ignore. C'est la vie!

I've never had anyone on ignore, and I'm not planning to.

I live in a society where the vast majority have many beliefs and values that are diametrically opposed to mine, so I've already had to learn how to filter out rhetoric or beliefs I find immoral, hateful, harmful, etc. I find RF much more relaxing and liberating as an outlet of expression compared to where I live. Combined with my curiosity about all sorts of different perspectives, this makes me feel no need to use the ignore function.

Wow, that is obnoxious to tell you that you are on ignore. I would only put someone on ignore if 95% of their posts were something I can't agree with, and if they are not willing to have a flexible conversation where they can at least try to understand why someone would have a different opinion. Those who continue to pop in with platitudes that don't help and do not have a conversation are a waste of time, IMO. I have had a couple of people on ignore but it's usually temporary.

If it makes you feel warm and fuzzy then do it vice don't bother to read what they have to say.
Of course that would require one to actualy do something vice having someone else (the software in this case) do it.
