WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange stops in Bangkok on his way to a US court and later freedom

How would you define the two and why does Assange meet the criteria of the latter?
Journalist check, and shield. Whistleblowers release.

Let's say there's a hornet's nest hanging near a school playground. If someone puts up signs informing people it's there, warns people about the effects of hornet stings, and lets you know what to do if stung, that's journalism. If someone knocks it down with a big rock and forces everyone to deal with the aftermath of their privately arrived-at decision, that's whistleblowing.

'A long unsuccessful war is more profitable than a short successful war. ' ~ Assange

Assange helped my confused mind figure out how the technologically advanced US-Nato was defeated by horse-riding taliban fighters with antique weapons and rags for helmets, after twenty years of fighting and trillions of dollars of budgetary allocation.
