No, it won't.

It may well however replace Theism as the "default" belief about God.

Religion will simply adjust and adapt. When the chips are down, it has little more use for God than Atheism itself does. The claim that God begets Religion is basically a Urban Legend.

There are a number of religions which have no need of a god or gods. There are many ideas and concepts that people make into religions.

I haven't read the article (I will, though), but I feel that humans are 'hard wired' to believe in something - whatever that may be. Perhaps it's a way of coping with stress or as a means of explaining the as-yet unexplainable. As these two things will always be around, I think we, as a species, will always cling on to belief to get us through them.

Hmm, reading the article, I get the sense that its author is assuming that Atheism excludes Religion and vice-versa.

Had he used "Faith in God" instead of "Religion" I would possibly agree with him (except for his belief that Atheism is a very recent phenomenom).

Noaidi, I would say that you are right and that the author of the article also agrees with you.

Still, there is no reason to assume that belief will ever go on unchallenged. I think we have already gone a long way towards putting it in check.

Having just read the article, the assumption is very sweeping. The author ignores the fact that pockets of poverty and fear will remain in any society, however affluent or technologically advanced.

So, does religion provide a viable solace to people in times of need? Should atheism replace religion / belief? Should people be denied that comfort (however tenuous)?

Interesting post, and I think a good question. Atheism needs to grow a great deal, before it replaces religion, which I think it will. As I have stated before, Atheism has a growing body, it just needs a head to be put on it, and then it will be far more powerful, but the power is already there. Its there, germinating within humans who are tired of religion. These humans believe religion represents God, a serious error in interpitation. From this error, many Atheist have been developed.

When a movement has been developed from an error in understanding, they too are doomed to fail.

Peace.

I don't know, but let' us hope so.

Atheism has a great growing body, with no head on it, no organized leadership. When it resolves this, it will be a power to be noticed, and politics will play a big role in this. As the search for human unity continues, Atheism will get its chance to solve, what I think can never be solved without God. Yet, humans have tried everythingelse, why not try Atheism, as a world leader?

What can Atheism do, that religion has not done?

Oh what a question we all will realize.

Peace.

Oh well, you're right, Mickiel.

We ARE going after your God.

And after we're through with him, you're next in line. Good luck.

I have considered my place in line quite often, thinking what God has in store for me. I really cannot tell, as of now, because he restrains me, limits me. But if he ever lets me loose, and gives me what I know he can give a human, if he ever lets me out of this box, if that ever happens, I know that would be quite something.

I would hope he gives me the ability to communicate far better than I now do, and remove this " Killer instinct" I have toward those who oppose him. Because left to myself, I would be a wrecking ball that would crush the oppisition, because I am vain; human; and don't really know how to do the things of God.

Peace.

I don't really see how atheism can replace anything. Even the most coherent bodies of atheists only have the glue of opposing theism to hold them together as atheists. If theism disappears then the term 'atheism' will cease to have much meaning.

Even if that were to happen, atheism wouldn't be replacing religion. Religion would probably just continue absent the theism present in many religions today.

Atheism is the default position. No one is born with any knowledge of a god concept. It is something we are taught.

I voted No, because religion is a really big thing and I think it will always be around in some shape or form. However, I really cannot say, because there's no way I'd really know for certain... I'd guess probably not though. People like religion. I don't think it's going anywhere.
