Wish I could help. I like wine, but tend toward the sweeter/whiter kind. I know that this is not sophisticated......but i like them none the less. What are some good red wines for social drinking? Not dessert sweet, anything but Merlot.

I happen to enjoy a nice Malbec more than Shiraz or Merlot. If you like big flavor, try malbec. Malbec is a grape variety. The malbec from Argentina is excellent.
For something lighter and very quaffable, a Cote du Rhone from France is always enjoyable.
Rioja is Spanish wine which is usually affordable and very drinkable.
Mostly, I drink Australian shiraz. Shiraz is typically fruity in the red berry direction, and goes well with most food. Here in Oz, I can buy an excellent shiraz for ten dollars.
I used to only drink sweet wines. But as I got older it started giving me heart burn. Eventually I moved to semi-dry, but there wasn't a lot of variety available and they were generally cheap-end. For the past year or two, I've been on dry wines. Recently I drank one of my old semi-drys and I couldn't believe how sweet it tasted, like drinking thick syrup. I guess its just acquired taste at the end of the day.Wish I could help. I like wine, but tend toward the sweeter/whiter kind. Malbec is def my favourite. If it were as affordable as shiraz I would probably drink little else. I got spoiled because my first taste of malbec was a thirty dollar bottle (Terra Rosa). Cosmic !I happen to enjoy a nice Malbec more than Shiraz or Merlot.
Thanks for the feedback... Been drinking Ravens Wood Zinfandel.. I can step it up a little at 8 USD a liter, it's still in that trash tier.
Zinfandel seems to be my medium though...
Get yourself a brewing kit. I make 9% alc cider and beer and it costs about 50c per litre. And it's excellent.
