Hilter was able to take over Germany, and several other nations with only words. He could have ended up taking over the rest of world with military action.
Thats why I consider Hitler to be worse than Stalin. Don't forget the millions Hitler brainwashed into following his ways, including the Hitler Youth.

It only takes a hard core of fanatics, coupled with an incredulous populace for said fanatics to seize power, then it's too late even if the population wakes up eventually.

Dismissing someone like Hitler as an evil monster is a facile way of distancing ourselves from him, and of pegging him as a rare and twisted individual; beyond the pale. This is a comfortable analysis, but a dangerous one. It enables us to ignore the normal psychological features that would allow almost all of us to commit exactly the same atrocities as did the German SS, the American Tiger Force or the Japanese Unit 731.

Hitler was not insane, nor did he have any particularly unusual psycho-pathologies. Neither did his lieutenants -- Hoess, Eichman, Heydrich, Himmler, Goering &al, who organized and put in motion the Nazi Holocaust. This is one of the most remarkable findings of the Nuremberg interrogations. Mass murderers are no different than us. In the same situation most normal people would do exactly the same things. The demon is in all of us.

The psychology behind this disturbing finding is demonstrated by the experiments of Stanly Milgram at Yale and Phillip Zimbardo at Stanford.

I've often had the theory (based upon no real research) that Hitler planned to fail eventually, but wanted to take out as many people as possible before he finally fell. When looked upon in that context it really does explain a lot of his bad strategies and extreme policies.

Theres is evidence to suggest that Hitler had Parkinson's disease, and thats what caused him make bad desicions that lead to his fall.

Stalin just didn't care. That makes him a schmuck, but he didn't set out with the intention of killing people, just with pushing his political agenda without regard for whether it involved running roughshod over everyone who happened to be in the way. Hitler, on the other hand, actually set out to exterminate certain groups of people. Edit: come to think of it, I couldn't say for certain which attitude is worse.

That Stalin had a lot more time is true. That Hitler was equally as bad is true, and given enough time, could well of turned out worse. One could also mention Mao, Genghis Khan, Attila the Hun, and numerous others. Seemingly, any list would cover most of the historical period.

right now, the top of my list would be the BTK guy they just caught. He has been killing and teasing the authorities for 25 years, and come to find out he was an "upstanding member of the community", held some high position in his church and worked for the state as an animal control officer. How twisted was this guy?
