From Baltimore Sun article:
"Baltimore Circuit Judge Timothy J. Doory suspended the balance of Ramkissoon's 20-year sentence and ordered her to report to a residential treatment facility for young women. The treatment program includes Bible study, and Ramkissoon will be required to complete the program, which doesn't have a specified length, before she can live on her own."
Perhaps I misunderstand, so let me see if I have this right. A religious cult convinces this mother that starving her baby is a good idea. She starves & kills the kid. The court says the mother is the real victim. The judge sentences her to probation & Bible study. I guess he thought she just didn't have enuf religion or the right religion in her life to know that killing her child was wrong. Is that about it? If I smoked, I'd ask for some of what that judge was huffing.
Well, isn't that just about revolting?
I remember this case from when it first broke. There are just a few things that should be understood before leaping to judgment and such.
1). Ria Ramkissoon pleaded guilty. She did not argue. She expressed genuine remorse and pain. This is important in the legal arena.
2). She was not able to operate as an adult in full control of her faculties and/or situation at the time of the events that lead to the death of her child.
3). She was in a 'prisoner' situation/relationship with the dominate Cult of Personality figure.
4). Her actions were monitored by her 'abductors' so as to prevent her from intervening on behalf of her child.
For what that is worth, there it is- my opinion and interpretation. I am not a judge. Now as to the rehabilitation program requiring a 'bible study' program. I read that in one blog, but have not been able to substantiate that claim. I do not see that such a sentence requirement is possible in the US. Someone correct me if I am wrong, but the courts are not even allowed to display the 'Ten Commandments' let alone order a 'Bible Study.' Is that not so?
