Conservatives in furor over Julia Roberts ad

Republicans have responded to the video with outrage, with some claiming that a wife lying about her vote is as bad as an affair.
“If I found out Emma was going to the voting booth and pulling the lever for Harris, that’s the same thing as having an affair,” Fox News host Jesse Watters said on air Wednesday in a clip highlighted by Mediaite.
Other GOP members including Charlie Kirk said the thought was “nauseating.”
In criticizing the ad, he discussed a husband working hard to afford his wife’s lifestyle, and then said a wife who lied to her husband about whom she backed would amount to undermining her husband.
“I think it’s so gross. I think it’s so nauseating where this wife is wearing the American hat, she’s coming in with her sweet husband who probably works his tail off to make sure that she can go you know and have a nice life and provide to the family, and then she lies to him saying, ‘Oh, yeah, I’m gonna vote for Trump,’ and then she votes for Kamala Harris as her little secret in the voting booth,” Kirk fumed to radio host Megyn Kelly.

What's gross is that the woman's portrayal of someone living in a society where she feels compelled to disguise her views from her husband and her community strikes me as true to life.

Unfortunately this is believable. :(

I was reading this last week about someone's experience waiting in line for early voting and seeing a husband standing over his wife while she was voting. And another man saying that he fills out his wife's and mother's mail-in ballots and then they sign them. The patriarchy is still the framework of many evangelical/traditionalist marriages.

What a fuss. She should just tell him she's voted for Harris and then tell him go **** himself. Simples.

Of course I assume the woman doesn't have any cats, or is experiencing the menopause, or has gone through the menopause, is perimenopausal or is on her period. In which case, why is she even voting?

IMO, sarcastic or not -- and I certainly hope the intent was sarcasm -- that wasn't particularly funny.

The real reason they are upset by this ad is that they think it might be effective.

Er... no she doesn't say that. He presumes as to how she voted but that's cos he's a ****.

I picked up on that too, but then I'm hyper aware of the kind of gaslighting Kirk used there, when they take what you say and twist it into something you never said at all. But I decided not to add it to the OP and wish I had now, so thanks for noticing that and putting it out there.

Yeah sarcasm. No not funny, but depressingly like the truth seems to be. In fact why is she even married to a maga?

Maybe because he morphed into something unrecognizable after 9 years of Trump, YouTube, right-wing podcasters, QAnon, Jan 6 insurrectionists, Stop the Steal fake electors, Secure the Borders militias, and apocalyptic end-of-the-world mega-church pastors?

Yep, they're already freaking out that women are voting in such big numbers.
Imagine stripping basic human autonomy from half the population - on what is probably the most life-changing decision of anyone's life - and then expecting them not to turn out in droves really upset and angry about that. It'd be adorable if it wasn't so disgustingly misogynistic.

Seems pretty condescending towards women.
How do the kids say it these days?

Tell us you don't understand what life is like as a woman without telling us you don't understand what life is like as a woman.

I assumed I missed it so watched it again. Not even close to saying a lie.

Funny. Women are voluntarily telling me the ad is condescending. Guess I know women better than you do.
