{ I think that I lost this post the first time ? If not , and this is a double post ... sorry }

I think that there is TOO much politics in religion , and TOO much religion in politics . Even so , I would vote for the person I conside to have ideals as close to mine as possible , for whatever . { I really didn't much care for politics though } .

Let's see -

On one hand, we have Sunstone (an atheist) -
On the other hand, we have Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, or James Dobson.

Against my better judgement, I'd have to go with Sunstone. At least he is accessible to us here at RF. :)

And he has that natty tinfoil hat!:jiggy:
Seriously though, I can't see an atheist working as Pope, but for anything else I can't see why you'd care.

...The church I go to gets about $4400 a month in grants in addition to tax exemptions. I have seen one mayor cantidate from an election about 10 years ago saying he was going to remove all grants to faith based orginizations. Which none of them spent the money on practice of faith, only activities to keep kids off the streets and family festivals...
I didn't take your comment as ignorant, just unclear. I would bet the services your church provides to the community would cost the government $10k or more because churches have a wonderful way of rounding up volunteer labor.

Any politician that tried to eliminate property tax breaks for 'places of worship' would be probably be run out of town, so thankfully, those aren't going away any time soon.:)

None of the above, I don't like politcs. It just confuses everything.

We all need food, we all need shelter, we all need protection from persecution. Everytime a government is set into power, no matter how good it starts out, inevitably it starts loose it's luster so to speak.
I hate to have to admit it, but you mirror my opinion of politics; the only thing wrong with politics is politicians, as the only thing wrong with humanity are the humans.

In answer to the original question, I would say that it doesn't matter a fig whether a politician is atheist, agnostic, or full blown Catholic, (But I am saying that from England, where the politicians have no religious agenda in their public lives.):)

Religion has a sway over a person's life, so religion is important to me when it comes to voting. I'd probably prefer an atheist over a religious christian man (or woman), but I'd take into account more than just that. I'm not sure that I can vote anywhere though, so it really doesn't matter.

Hey everyone! I guess this is geared more towards people with religious backgrounds, but I want to see everyone's responce!

Would you ever vote in an atheist and/or an atheist? If so- how far? City council? Senators? Possibly president?

I would vote for an atheist or agnostic every time! They do not try to force religion down people's throats!

I probably already have, in the UK candidates for public office don't generally wave their religious position like a banner.

Would rather a person that uses logic and reason than someone who believes the world must end as we know it for his savior to return, and is sitting in the Whitehouse with his finger on the button.

I think there are two sorts of religious persons just as there are two sorts of atheists. The first kind is doing the best they can with what they understand to be true and should be capable of doing an honest and honorable job of it and the second sort actually want into politics.

I'd vote for an atheist if I agreed with his policy and found his approach and character consistent and admirable. Why not?
