We all know that the god of Judea was violent and warlike in the old testament, is this because he was originally the war god of a larger pantheon of deities?
What do you think?
Maybe. I think the Hebrew legends preserved in the Bible have been edited and "sanitized", but still preserve evidence of polytheism -- for instance, it seems virtually certain to me that El-Elyon, the god of Melchizedek (and at least indirectly of Abraham), was not the same as Yahweh.
There's direct evidence of the amalgamation of traditions in Exodus 6: "And God spake unto Moses, and said unto him, I am Yahweh, and I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name Yahweh was I not known to them."
