Exegesis fun time, my friends. Let us examine the scripture below and see if we do need a Bible or not in order to be a Christian. Many religions require a holy book as a revelation of God but in my opinion and of others that I have read, a Christian does not need a Bible to be a Christian, that there is another source of revelation that Christians can and do rely on. Let us take a gander:

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. - Acts of the Apostles 2

I said "YES" because all the questions I had could never have been answered without the Bible. I was never going to make a commitment without having all my questions answered to my satisfaction. It took me two years to study the Bible's teachings in order to make the commitment to become a baptized Christian. I built my faith on a rock and I have never looked back.

I don't believe that emotional responses that have no knowledge to support them can ever come from God because the knowledge has to come first. I don't believe that the holy spirit works in the same way as it did at Pentecost because it wasn't those who received the holy spirit who benefited...it was the ones who heard their preaching in their own language....that is where it had the impact. Today, there is no need for the holy spirit to act for those who speak different languages because the Bible and all the knowledge we need, is available in all languages. God has no need for 'tricks' these days because Paul said we had to grow up, and a mature Christian is identified by the three main foundations of Christianity..."Faith, Hope and Love". (1 Corinthians 13:11-13)

A spiritual journey begins by hearing the Bible's message and having our curiosity piqued. Then there is the need to get answers. Getting those answers is what creates an appetite for spiritual things. The more you find out...the more you want to know...the more you know, the more you realize how much there is to know.....and before you know it, you are a full blown Bible student, devouring the book like its your last meal.

You're right. You need the holy Spirit to be a Christian. However it helps a lot to have a Bible if you can get one. But for people who say it is a must; then what about Christians who can't read or who can't obtain a Bible? So of course that's nonsense.

Christianity is for all people on the earth if they receive the gospel. And the gospel is the good news of what Jesus did and can do for them. Christianity is not only sent to the literate.

I am happy to fly in a plane if the pilot has never read the manual, or even if he
or she can't read at all. You can "wing it" so to speak.

Well, early christians had no new testament

But obviously you need some sort of Judeo Christian word of mouth.

The tribes in the Americas, Asia, Australia, south Pacific,g etc. got ****ed over during Pentecost

I think a focus upon the parables of the Carpenter will suffice

The 120 who received tongues were Jewish disciples of Jesus, and knew the OT intimately. That is why Peter cited from memory an OT passage describing the tongues experience to his listeners.

How so? I wasn't aware most of these peoples were even known by the Jews
on the day of Pentecost.

You don't need the bible to be christian. Just christ himself.
Yeah you don't need the scriptures, You just need to have faith in - Rama, Krishna, Shiva or Mother Goddess Durga to be a Hindu, Zoroaster to be a Zoroastrian, Buddha to be a Buddhist, Mahavira to be a Jain, Moses to be a Jew, Mohammad to be a Muslim, Joseph Smith to be of the Church of LDS, Bahaullah to be a Bahai, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad to be a Ahmadiyya. True.

I'm sure you know each of those don't follow the same line of reasoning [nor the word faith] as the one beside it, right?

I've seen estimates that 90% of all people in the early Church were illiterate, plus one simply did not personally own a Bible back 2000 years ago as they were very expensive and hard to get. Even a church might only have a copy of a few letters or so, and that's if they were lucky.

I don’t think you would even know what it means to be a Christian, a disciple of Jesus, without the Bible.

"If you remain in my word, then you are truly my disciples. You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free."

John 8:31-32

Person is a disciple of Jesus, if he remains in his words. That can be difficult without the Bible message.

So, there where no Christians for like 400 years after the Death of Christ, because the Canon of Scripture was not established until 5th century CE. I guess 1st century Christians weren't really Christians because they had no Bibles

Note that no knowledge was imparted to them, just an emotional high.

Had they been smoking weed (tongues of fire) or drinking moonshine (filled with spirit), again no knowledge would have been imparted, but something not unlike speaking in tongues / talking nonsense would be entirely normal.

I read somewhere they had mushrooms back then ...

Nah, they were collectively experiencing a totemic meme as a emancipatory community of believers. Happens in many cultures after they survive a traumatic event.

so my take is that if there was no Bible, there would not only be no Christians, there would be no Christianity.
Your quote does not help you because it is itself from the bible. You are essentially saying that you don't need a Bible because the bible tells you so.....not a sound argument.

Well, they had the old testament plus all the other writings. Jesus was thought by them to be the Messiah of the Jews.I suspect they were given the moniker by the Jews and/or Romans

Are you trying to limit the Bible to only the New Testament stories? Why?

No Old Testament equals no Jewish religion equals no messiah equals no need for Jesus equals no Christians.
