Jaime Lannister.

This character is one pretty much everyone hates at the start. Push a kid out of a window to his death! What's not to hate. But as the story progresses this hated Kingslayer reveals a depth to his character that shows an understanding of a reality of the world he lives in that others do not grasp. The child witness could bring down a kingdom. The king he slew was a madman.

You still don't like the guy because he pushed a kid out of a window but everything else surrounding this character has so much depth. The hailed warrior who sees his own abilities on a practical level, the man who loves but not so much that when his love is betrayed he remains a stupid lapdog, who sees more in his duty to maintaining the peace in the realm as opposed to a sworn loyalty to a mad king, etc.
