Your Favorite Religious Music?

Native American chants, along with Carlos Nakai, Elan Michaels and Oliver Shanti. This inspires me to look deeper into the land around me and the history involved. It makes me want to get up and dance.

Outside of Native American, Loreena McKennit, Medieval Baebes, Heather Alexander and Blackmore's Night. This stuff inspires me in a similar style, but a different fashion.

My favorite overtly Christian song is Believe by Savatage

So after all those one night stands
You've ended up with heart in hand
A child alone, on your own, retreating
Regretful for the things you're not
And all the things you haven't got
Without a home, a heart of stone lies bleeding

And for all the roads you followed
And for all you did not find
And for all the dreams
You had to leave behind
I am the way, I am the light
I am the dark inside the night
I hear your hopes, I feel your dreams
And in the dark, I hear your screams
Don't turn away, just take my hand
And when you make your final stand
I'll be right there, I'll never leave
And all I ask of you, believe

Your childhood eyes were so intense
While bartering your innocence
For bits of string, the grown-up wings you needed
But when you had to add them up
You found that they were not enough
To get you in, pay for sins repeated

And for all the years you borrowed
And for all the tears you hide
And for all the fears
You had to keep inside
I am the way, I am the light
I am the dark inside the night
I hear your hopes, I feel your dreams
And in the dark, I hear your screams
Don't walk away, just take my hand
And when you make your final stand
I'll be right there, I'll never leave
And all I ask of you is believe

I never wanted to know
Never wanted to see
I wasted my time
Till Time wasted me

I never wanted to go
I always wanted to stay
'Cause the persons I am
Are the parts that I play

So I plot and I plan
And I hope and I scheme
To the lure of a night
Filled with unfinished dreams

And I'm holding on tight
To a world gone astray
As they charge me for years
I can no longer pay.....

I love old-time gospel. Particularly singing groups like The Dixie Hummingbirds, The Swan Silvertones, Gold City, The Statler Brothers, Mighty Clouds of Joy, and others like that.
I find the songs to be very uplifting and make me feel great!
I also love hymns.

The devout Lutheran J.S. Bach has written some of my favorite religious music.

I also see the quirky pop of Jane Siberry as having very spiritual themes, especially the album When I Was A Boy, which includes the wonderful "Calling All Angels" duet with k.d. lang.

It helps me regain some perspective beyond the everyday worries.

I am going to have to go with Gospel. Very soul-full, very heartfelt. Preferably groups with a great male or female singer backed by a strong, harmonius choir. I also enjoy the fact that much of the gospel music expressed leaves much improvisional space not only for the singers but for the band to articulate their praise to God through their personal musical talents.

I like Johnny Cash's religious & Gospel stuff, especially the song "Unchained", which is on his CD of the same name.

Pink Floyd- Wish you were here.
"2 lost souls swimming in a fish bowl..."
pretty much sums up my religious experience and also sets an excellent background when trying to figure these things out, also Hey You,Pink Floyd.

I forgot to put earlier that I like Bach's religious music. Most Bach is very intense and so I only listen to it sometimes.

I'm a big fan of Christian rock (Casting Crowns and Lifehouse, mostly), but one of my favorite blues artists just released a fabulous Gospel album (Jonny Lang).

Done here.
Chant. No contest.

In particular, Byzantine chant. However, Znamenny chant, Ethiopian Orthodox chant, Coptic Orthodox chant, Gregorian chant, Tibetan Buddhist chant, and Native American chant are all beautiful, too.

Two of the "founding fathers" of contemporary Christian music, who were big in the 70s and early 80s, are favorites of mine: Keith Green and Larry Norman. They were two Jesus-lovin', rockin' hippies! :guitar1:

It's a shame there aren't any Christian singers like them out there today. Just a bunch of mindless fluff, mostly.

John Michael Talbot is an exception. He's unique. He's a monk with incredible talent. His music is mellow and comforting, and makes me feel as if I am worshipping God in some grand, old cathedral somewhere.
