Very interesting and enlightening story Abu Rashid. I have to admit that i'm kind of fascinated by the effect of Islam that i see in what you say in your posts. I'm amazed by the effect it apparently had on you. Such stories like yours strengthens my faith. That you came form such a different way of life, and yet accepted Islam whole heartedly like this.

I have a question for you if you don't mind:

Was their any concepts in Islam that you struggled with accepting, considering how different your outlook on life was? If there was which ones?

Barak'allah feek ya akh Badran.

Yes of course there were many things I struggled with, and I probably drove one brother in particular crazy with all my questioning and dilemmas that I posed for him. But al7amdulilah he was able to answer all, and to give me satisfactory answers, and to help me learn how to shape myself according to Islam, rather than shaping Islam to suit my desires (as some unfortunately do when coming to Islam).

My period of "questioning" probably lasted all up for about 1-2 years, and involved a lot of soul searching and trying to reconcile some of the things that were difficult for me. since I was always very independant, free thinking and anti-authoritarian, it was very difficult to accomodate Islam with these things. But I realised that without embracing Islam wholeheartedly and completely submitting myself to it, then no real worthwhile change would occur in my life. This is the main aspect to Islam, is completely submitting one's will to Allah (swt) and leaving behind all arrogance, personal desires, pride etc. except for pride in Islam.

That is actually exactly what's so interesting to me, the transition from that point when everything is centered around your freedom and your opposition to any kind of authority, to completely submitting to Allah and Islam. It's very fascinating. It's good to hear you had someone to ask your questions and share your concerns with, it's always helpful. May Allah always guide you and protect your strong faith. Thanks for the response Abu Rashid.

Wa 'alaikum as-salam Abu Rachid,

Thank you akhi for sharing with us your story which is indeed intersting. Alhamdulillah that Allah saved you from that meaningless lost life you had. It's true that whoever has a pure intention in seeking the truth Allah guides him to His path.
الحمد لله على نعمة الإسلام و كفى بها نعمة

I really liked this and unfortunately as you said a lot of people shape Islam to suit their desires.
To tell you the truth I am impressed with your knowledge about Islam and the history about Islam masha'Allah!

I have some questions for you brother if you don't mind, what was the reaction of your family when you reverted to Islam? Did you start studying Arabic immediately after embracing Islam? Did you study it in Australia or in an Arab country?

Again thank you for responding to my request in sharing with us your story :)

Alhamdulilah they were quite fine with it. Since they were quite indifferent to religion, and sanctify freedom, then they had no grounds on which to oppose it. Sadly some of my fellow Australians have been severely dealt with by their families when embracing Islam. Some are expelled from their homes, or beaten or suffer other hardships, especially females (so much for all the enlightened secularist treatment of females).

I did, but not seriously, just learning the alphabet and the necessary surahs for salat. I've always had an interest in languages, so it was a perfect opportunity for me to learn another language with a good reason for outlaying the time and effort.

Both. Last time I went to Egypt I stayed for about 3 months, so I hired a tutor to come and teach me grammar, but to be honest most of my learning was done here in Australia. I am lucky to have worked in a company of all Arabic speakers (who knew very little English) for the past 8 years, and learning from and conversing with them has been one of the most beneficial things regarding my quest to learn Arabic. Also my wife is an Arabic-speaker so that helps a little too I guess. I've also done a lot of learning by re-teaching what I've learnt to my kids, which is a great way to consolidate and expand on knowledge.

Alhamdulillah your surrounding has made it easy for you to learn the language :)

I just bumped into this thread by chance, i'm wondering why i didn't get to see it before!! I have so much to read up here before i go on posting here and there :p

I'm absolutely at loss for words after reading your truly inspirational stories, and cannot thank you enough for willing to share them with us, i really had no idea about anyone on RF and i had strangely bumped into RF by chance too (like i bumped into this thread) when i googled for religious forums (one fine sunny day when the birds were chirping outside my window, and when i'd almost decided that internet was such a waste of my time and i should rather put the fussy cats outside at ease or try to catch a sparrow, ahh i forgot the thread wasn't about 'my journey to Rf' :p) and this was the first search result . Enjoying the journey so far :)

If my observation serves me right i feel most of these RFers are not here, or dont seem to have much time on their hands now to post much (like a few couch potatoes like me), but they must know how appreciated and loved their stories were and how refreshing it is to go through this information.:)

All my prayers for all of you and all the muslim Ummah and and i so wish we could all meet in person one day, its great to know so many people from different backgrounds here, I feel like i've found a whole new treasure of good friends! :D i swear!

Its not the real number of Frubals hhhhhh , otherwise we would have been the most beloved people ever. When you got the first three frubals , if I remember correctly, you already something like 10000 points :D lool

So take it easy on yourself , before you start believing that we make Frubal Business, its just a way to make the RFers think they are the most important guys in the world :D

The frubal game is over. Isnt it? We cannot frubal more then 1 point, at least I cant. The RF rules have changed.

Truth
I was 15 when I began to write poetry. Most of it dealt with my personal spiritual journey. I'll post one, but remember I was young so don't laugh at me. I'm an artist and I'm sensitive about it:

Somber Soliloquoy

Marching to the everlasting drone of the masses of corrupt malicious drums
The drums of ignorance and want
Send its fork-tongued messege to spread over the mind
Of the so-called upright man,
The righteous man,
The God fearing man
The aware of satan man.
Man is so aware of satan that
He follows him willingly
Unwillingly
In a somber soliloquoy

Do I march in that most somber a band?
Should I?
My soliloquoy is the soliloquoy of
The most hungry soul
Hungry for the knowledge of God
Good and evil
Knowledge enough to be aware of the drums
But don't follow
Don't follow
The rythm of the deceitful drums
Your poetry MashAllah is very beautiful! :) very neat and mature coming from a 15 yr old, i used to do poetry myself but i'll use it to humor the staff if they get bugged or something with me,(hope not) cuz that is going to be pure hilarious :D
