Your Musical Dislikes...

Smoke

Done here.
I don't dislike any genre I listen to EVERYTHING.
Same here. I think it's naive -- at best -- to dismiss entire genres of music, especially a genre as seminal as country music. But I do dislike certain performers, or rather their body of work. In particular, I think the Beatles are probably the most overrated group of all time. And Enya makes me want to kill myself.

What styles/genres of music do you tend to dislike the most and Why?

Please be as specific as you can about the 'Why's'.
As a musician, I'm very curious about people's perceptions
of what they hear, and how music is labeled,
and as well, what people specifically do and DON'T like to hear.

While the purpose of the thread is not really meant to be "debate"
(as we are talking in part about perception and personal taste)
still I invite and hope for some interactive conversation.

If your perception is different than another posters,
don't be rude, but feel free to state why. :cover:

People can be very protective of 'their' music. ;):D

Christmas music. Generally speaking it is overplayed, overly saccharine, and ridiculously smarmy. It makes my teeth ache. *shuddder*

Gospel is pretty low on my list of favorite music genres, mostly because it comes across as either smug or as needy.

Most stuff at the rap end of the hip-hop/rap spectrum. The more 'gangsta' the less likeable I find it generally.

Oh my gosh I love Enya. Her voice is so beautiful and soothing.

It's not so much a musical dislike as a singer dislike - I love certain opera singers covering modern songs, because they make them sound new and beautiful, but some... Katherine Jenkins... has covered some and ruined them. In her case - leave them be and stick to opera!

I don't like rap/hip-hop and country. I do like Johnny Cash, though. I also hate the recent hard rock like Creed and Nickelback.

I'll have to agree with that including the part about the Beatles. Though I'm not a big fan of the "New" Country, if I'm going Country it needs to be old school or Alt-Country.

I'll agree with that one too and they seem to start playing it just after Labor Day...

Not a style exactly but I hate the violin when it is played on it's own with rare exceptions and some soprano voices make me want to claw at my face. Not a massive Country and western fan, but I do like Johnny Cash and some Willie Nelson. I'm way too old and too sober for trance and trip hop or any of that happy hardcore stuff, but I have pretty eclectic taste in music, oh the really obvious autotuned voice like Kesha and Katie Perry makes me want to drill holes in my head.

eta and Enya

Not a fan of bluegrass, especially the vocals. Like who told those guys they could sing? I lack an appreciation of much opera. Don't like gangsta rap, but do enjoy some other rap. I really don't like Frank Sinatra and don't care much for Tony Bennett. Truth to tell, I don't like much rock, especially heavy metal, acid, etc. I'm old, and I like jazz vocals and especially old-school R & B and stuff that old people like.

Mrs Rev's father was big on Chinese opera.
It made me think of cats being tortured.....yes, that's a bad thing.
Still....not as bad as the musical "Cats".

I don't blame you. There are some good mainstream country artists still, but probably 90% of what Nashville cranks out is crap. Toby Keith, for instance, and whoever that idiot was who sang Butterfly Kisses. If it's not jingoistic, it's smarmy. But there really is a pony in that barn somewhere. :)

Well I have a few musical dislikes...

Rap - I don't like it, because it seems redundant to me. All the songs are of similar subject, and it sounds all very similar. A beat made from a horrible electronic drum emulator, and then someone rhyming over it, and usually using non-English(mostly non-sense) words.

Pop - It's too happy. Not that I don't like happy music. Also, I am very picky when it comes to vocal styles, and a lot of it is whiny. Again, I don't like having a lot of electronic or simulated instruments in music, for me it takes away the purpose of making music. It makes it, for me, unnatural and fake sounding, which to me is unpleasant.

Country - I can't stand southern accents... haha I just can't. Plus, the twangy country guitar sound isn't something that works for me.

Scene/Emo/Whatever-you-want-to-call-it - It's very whiny, which I really can't stand.

No she is evil, it's all codifed plans for world domination, or so I have hallucinated
It must be some kind of boring saccharin evil, instead of the good kind.
My apologies to her fans.....this is just my personal taste.

Rap and country are usually called out when it comes to this topic and I'm certainly guilty of dismissing a few genres of music in the past without giving it a chance. When it comes to rap it took artists like Blackalicious or DJs like DJ Spooky to help me realize what talented musicians and songwriters there are buried under the pop mainstream (though Blackalicious certainly aren't obscure).

Garth Brooks pop country drivel makes me want to gouge my eardrums out with spurs. But I love Americana, traditional folk, neo-folk/weird folk, cowpunk, alt' country or whatever. The Carter Family is brilliant and It took recent bands like The Handsome Family or Paula Frazer to help me realize that the pop veneer hides some great music way down below the surface.
