And in some cases, they are our relatives. Thor is not only a bud, but a big brother. We consider Odin and Frigga to be All-Father and All-Mother, respectively, and give the respect due to parents. Other deities could be somewhere between elder siblings and aunts or uncles... that's the kind of respect we pay to them. In fact, the relationship is so close it's very likely that if we were to kneel or bow down to them they'd say "get up!" :p

First blot I ever did was to Balder. I was mostly improvising, and ended up doing some kneeling gestures.

The Meade spilled all over the floor later that day. LOL

No, that's deliberate. It's an Anglicization of the name, which I do with all the Gods, since I tend to follow a more Anglic variant.

HERETIC!
I am already preparing a stake to burn you on.

...By the way
Got any gasoline to lend me? I am a little short on cash at the moment and forgot to set aside some money to buy gasoline. If you aren't over 200 lbs some kerosene will work nice to.

Wee gonz ah getz Medievalz ups in here!

Gee whiz I am getting confused. I am suppose to burn Romans not Nords and Anglics. Forget what I said earlier, I am gonna go see if I can get a couple of tigers to give you a proper death!!
And while you are in Valhalla tell that hammer wielding red-head he needs a shave!

..and now I'm really missing that Yoda vs. Darth Vader smiley....

See, I think he was trying to tell you something. If you were holding the horn or cup as you were kneeling, he probably thought "hmm... if he wants the mead close to the ground, let's do that". :D Seriously, so much is reconned and there's precious little writings about practices. I read somewhere there's evidence that people did bow or genuflect. Somewhere else said that because of the fiercely independent spirit of the Norse and the Vikings, they probably stood with arms outstretched, So who really knows? Personally I prefer a nod of the head or slight bow with my right hand or fist over my heart area. The deities are, after all, much greater than we are and earned our respect through their deeds. Just my upg.

If I am learning my Old Norse correctly, and that's an Anglic spelling, it's preserved from Old Norse. Nominative masc. sing. nouns end with 'r'... Odhinnr, Thorr, Baldr, Hodr, Njordr, Heimdallr, Freyr, (not sure about Tyr, maybe Tyrr).

ENGLISH! English dude! Do you speak it!?

Lol

Bilskirnir = lightning-crack.
Thrudheimr = world of strength.
Thrudvangar = field of strength.

They're all names for where Thor lives and some people go in their afterlife.

Those name sound like the prerequisites for copulation with a gorilla if you ask me. But hey, I ain't judging

LOL Maybe.

Bowl, actually. I don't have a horn, and wanted there to be enough Meade for everyone there.

I think in the future, I'll probably just lower my head a bit. It'll probably also depend more on which God it is.

Well, I only Anglicize the Old Norse when there's no attested equivalent in Old English that I can "convert" to Modern English.

See I personally just see it as him spilling some mead. I'm a clumsy person so these things always happen to me. I wouldn't think of it any other way. It's just something normal.

Perhaps I lack the interpretation you guys seem to have. I never think of events as such, they're mundane happenings. I don't see any message in it. Maybe that's why I'm having difficulty understanding hard polytheism.

And sorry a bit off topic but I found this quote too interesting to pass.

Actually I was just making a joke... I don't think the gods play tricks like that. ;)

A bit off topic, sure, but definitely quite interesting. It's also not something that escaped my notice. After all, it didn't spill from an otherwise stable position; it was placed quite precariously. In all likelihood, it would have spilled regardless of how I performed the blot.

Interpretation really is the key difference. Nothing has happened to me that I would say "science can't explain." Rather, my mind naturally interprets events as having a Gods' hand behind it. It's nothing inherently "wrong" with either of us, but rather that our brains are wired in such a way that we'll interpret the same event in completely different ways.

Actually I was just making a joke... I don't think the gods play tricks like that. ;)

I think they totally do. ^_^ At least some will.

By the way, does playing Persona 4 count as a polytheistic religious experience? Cause every time I turn that one on, I feel... something. Inspiration. I mean the game isn't even religious; it's a JRPG with a high-quality anime plot with effectiveness in combat being dependent on how strong the bonds with your friends are, and Jungian psychology coupled with world mythology all over the bloody place.

And yet... I feel like the game's content causes a God to sing out to me. But unlike with other things that do that, too, this one is more muffled and undefined... as if there's something in between. (For those who've played the game, a "fog", if you will. ;)) And yet it sounds grander than the others. Like this is something that will truly open the door for me. But the game itself is just a starting point...
