Seriously now, most deities seem to be idealizations of human virtues, and arguably never meant to be taken as literal beings.

A few, including those of the Cthulhu Mythos and probably those of Crowley's Thelema, seem to be basically satire (when they are meant to be taken at all seriously, that is).

The idea that people should believe in the literal existence of some deity is, by all appearances, an oddity that most doctrines don't really know how to deal with - even to discourage them.

But... but... my gods aren't odd and distant. I mean, yes, technically Sun Spirit is some 150 million kilometers from me, but I see it every day and feel its effects every day. Since... Sun Spirit technically isn't on earth, does that make it alien? Moon Spirit too?

Well, duh. Everyone knows that the deities of myth are really humanoid reptiles from the planet Nibiru who enjoy eating human flesh, drinking human blood and raping babies.

We have been working on a sun religion at work, out in the sun :D

I guess they are aliens until and unless they become US of A citizens. Sorry, but the law is the law.

Once they know that we know, the show is over. Must keep it secret. Most political leaders are aliens also...

Ever wonder why your deities are sorta odd and distant? It's because they're aliens. Might explain all the "interesting" manifestations they take on. So, 'deity', or creepy alien, that's the question.

Obviously. If a god were terrestrial it'd be a very meaningless god.

Well, as long as they come in peace and speak our languages :D

I'll tell that to the next tree I encounter. The tree might just secretly laugh at me, though, since panspermia is one of the possible ways life originally came to Earth.

NoOoOOOoOoo my treeeeeees! :faint:

But in seriousness, the designation of something as "alien" is somewhat arbitrary. The universe isn't a closed system - stuff moves around. If we want to be silly, the photons from Sun (in outer space) become part of Earth (typically regarded as non-alien) meaning the distinction is, ultimately, somewhat moot.

I will confess, though, that the science fiction plot device of "the Pagan gods were 'really' technologically advanced space aliens" tends to tick me off. Probably because it demonstrates a profound lack of understanding of polytheistic theologies and a level of disrespect that is just hard to stomach. >_>;
