  • Oops! I never saw your reply cause you posted it on your page and not mine. But thank goodness I came to tell you that I anticipate adding a thorough reply to your drug legalization plan, one that will be worth reading and all that. So, expect that in the coming days.

Americans are lazy in an intellectual sense as well, the world might be in that regards.

Joao U. Riberio. He's even more political? That's like my main vein. Viva o povo brasileiro looks like the big one here in America. I'm definitely going to check him out. I got a Borges book, and I'm excited to read him since he's the big name that has came out here (so the translations are a little easier to find). I'mdefinitely going to read Riberio, especially since I can virtually no info online on him in English!

Thanks for the frubal. I think we agree on more than we disagree on. And changing a little every day ... :)
Brazilians are somewhat lazy in the intelectual sense, I fear. We generally know very little of Hispanic writers.

That said, your tale reminds me of João Ubaldo Ribeiro, a very skilled writer that does handle some of those themes, albeit in a more political vein.

As for magical realism, it is indeed a very Brazilian taste. Jorge Luiz Borges (not a Brazilian) you have already heard of, I assume? For the most part that taste manifests more in other forms of fiction (soap operas, mainly) than in literature proper, though.
Roberto Bolaño - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Here's an English link, btw, though I'm sure one in Portuguese would be even more detailed and knowledgeable.
We can all correct the flaw of not having read enough ever. :)

I'm reading his last work (as I heard it was good) and I'm trying to find more of his influences. It's come to my attention recently, that there is the whole realm of magical realism that is very proliferet in Central and Southern American (though it seems to have sort of started in the art world, and possibly with an Italian writer). I think of the Columbian, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, whom I am definitely wanting to read. Bolano was from Argentina originally, then lived in Mexico, and then Spain.

But I wanted to see if there were any great works of literature or philosophy that are Brazilian in nature, or perhaps more South American in general, that you would recommend. Stuff that, hopefully, has an English translation and is definitely awesome. :D

But I would definitely suggest 2666, some people have already claimed it to be the greatest novel since 2000 so far, and these are people who don't even speak Spanish!
    Thanx for the sensitive frubie!
Perhaps my total will climb back up into the twenty million range again, eh?
Ok. Think I dont need it, though, since I just realized that since they have a forum I might get better responses there. Sorry for wasting your time.
Ok. Its a link to a site that sells old games. The site has a forum that it links to, but its not what I would mention. Anyway, maybe a dumb question, do you mean I could ask the advice in the Site Feedback thread or if it would be against the rules to post a thread asking for advice :p?
