Maybe you should give painting another try -- you're pretty creative.
How long varies a whole lot. Sometimes I get stuck and set aside for a month or more a portrait that is only half done. Other times, I start and finish within a week or a few days.
Of course, you've got to wait forever to varnish the thing. At least three months, because if you varnish and the paint is not absolutely dry, the painting will explode. Well, all but explode.
