Does Christmas actually mean anything apart form its connection to Jesus?

It is the co-option of the Winter Solstice by christians. Nothing to do with a virgin birth or 3 kings or wise men or any such stories. It should be seen as a festival of renewal and hope for the year to come. Something we can all relate to.

    Heaven

I thought the only criterion - for a christian - is to believe in christ as your saviour. Do deeds matter?

Why do people believe in religion?

I see religion as having a certain explanatory power and, regardless whether the explanation is factually correct or not, it does give some religious people a sense of understanding and purpose. Fear may play a role for some, but I know of no pantheist who came to their religion through fear. It...

Why do people believe in religion?

I think you are grouping all religions under the notion of what you perceive in the Abrahamic religions. Your views certainly wouldn't apply to a pantheist or an animist, yet they are regarded as religions. Where are the animist temples and what battles have been fought in the name of pantheism?

Stone-Tipped Spears Half a Million Years Old!

The work of Steven Mithen may be useful in explaining this. The idea is one of cognitive fluidity: "Cognitive fluidity is a term first popularly applied by Mithen in his book The Prehistory of the Mind, a search for the origins of Art, Religion and Science. The term cognitive fluidity...

    The Liberal War on Christmas!

Expose Santa regarding his preferential treatment towards well behaved children, thereby marginalising kids who are less predisposed to parental conceptions of acceptable behaviour. What a bstard. All kids should be equal, Santa. What's the deal, here?

    The Liberal War on Christmas!

Pull off Santa's beard and expose him as Jimmy Saville. Edit: this may only make sense to UK folks!

    Vegetarians i need your help

I've been veggie for 26 years and not really considered this as a problem. Would the potential to become a chicken preclude an egg from being part of a vegetarian diet? If it's an unfertilised egg, then I don't see it as contravening the "rules" of vegetarianism.

Does it Matter that Hitler was a Theist?

Does that also apply to your god? I'm just thinking of 7 or so chapters into Genesis, and he's killed virtually everything - plants, animals, unborn foetuses... Considerably more than Hitler, yes?

Does it Matter that Hitler was a Theist?

And what are these moral requirements that are absolute?

Is it fair to make students work as a team or with a partner?

I often get pupils to work in pairs or in groups, and I try to avoid allowing them to work in 'friendship' groups if possible. By working with others, you learn different ways of moving through a task. That can only be to your benefit (and theirs). Everyone brings something new to the task.

Is Richard Dawkins a good scientist?

You claimed that you know your god exists. This implied certainty and indisputable knowledge. However, now that you have explained further, I’ll let it pass. At least you are willing to now state that religious claims are not absolute. Perhaps you can see, therefore, why many do not accept them...
