Because we love to believe that we are special. If there is other life out there, you can bet it's not as great and evolved and wonderful and moral as we are - which is why we have gods and devils concerned about our behaviour, not theirs.
I agree. There are some teachers that will routinely issue homework because they see it as 'part of the job', and is thus an often pointless exercise as far as education is concerned. If we are going to request additional time from pupils, then it should be for their benefit, not ours.
Your teacher has a point. Atheists have no thoughts.
Except this one:
Your teacher is an idiot.
BTW, can you ask him where he got this idea from? Better still, get him to register here at RF and we can debate him (if he dares...)
Homework is not mandatory in the Scottish education system. As a teacher of 12-18 year olds, Im not in favour of giving a large amount of homework to my pupils. There is an expectation from the older pupils (16-18 year olds) that they will undertake independent revision and study at home and...
OK, unclear phrasing on my part. I was referring to the RF discussions on evolution in general, not only this thread. There are so many threads similar to this one that the arguments rapidly tend to follow the same pattern.
Hi. Thanks for the wee debate on the 'Design Your Own Religion' thread. As you said, our differing views comes down to the use of a word. I suppose it's not worth dragging out any further. Cheers!
The reason for the ridicule and contempt is because of the ignorance many display when trying to refute evolution. People are using theology to argue against science. Many don't even grasp what evolution entails.
Some here bang on about a creator / designer as if that were a testable fact, not...
Interesting, rusra. There have been numerous people in various threads here saying exactly the same thing. In science, nothing is set in stone, nothing is taken for granted. Results, data, conclusions are routinely challenged and rightly so.
Where do you get the notion that science doesn't...
Yes, this is my point. Religion exists because humans created / invented it.If there were no humans and associated life experiences, religion would not exist (note that I am not talking about 'spirituality' here - only religion.)
Can you illustrate how religion is not a human invention, then?
This implies that religion existed prior to humans 'discovering' it. Religion is a human construct. People may believe it is inspired, but it still had to created.
You're right, you know. 'Atheist' is just way too complicated. 'Atheo' sounds much better.:D
The ending -ist denotes the person doing or practicing the action, so an atheist is a person who doesn't believe in gods.
Edit: oops. I see this burning hot topic was addressed a few posts above.
