Question for athiests - if God existed, and this being loved you regardless (no hell), and only pushed for you to love yourself as much as possible over the course of your life, would God be worth believing in?
Relating to the second part of that question - perhaps your conscience is one...
Is there a difference between instinct and conscious choice?
Does the worm look at the sky and have the ability to process what it is? Is the worm even aware of itself?
Do you think a higher level of intelligence is related to a more clear and accurate perception of reality (higher level of consciousness)?
-- Rank a worm's ability to perceive reality from 1 to 10
-- Rank a lion's ability to perceive reality from 1 to 10
Sorry, I didn't mean to post that in this thread -- still trying to figure out how everything works.

"Well, the website never addressed sin or hell... and personally I don't think the concept of evil has to be tied to these; it CAN be recognized as a subjective idea (i.e. murder is bad...
Question for Helios: Is the the impossibilty of reaching absolute zero b/c of Newton's Law of cooling? A.k.a. a decreasing exponential function that can never hit zero b/c it's limit is zero as x goes to infiniti? I only ask this b/c a lot of statements are made about what "is" when in fact...
Perhaps I should clarify for you.
"Ladder of evolution" was used as a metaphor, if you have half a brain you know exactly what I mean. Perhaps you would like me to use the term PHYLOGENETIC TREE to clarify. Instead of dissecting my style of writing you might realize my point:
From our...
Furthermore, I would like to propose we reinstate worshipping the sun. Clearly this is the only path to enlightenment. It also promises a fantastic Armageddon.
"For atheists everywhere and agnostics like me who reject God anyways what will feel our spiritual lives in the future when eventually religious doctrine will hopefully fade away?"
This seems like I might be rehashing something, but I just say we bring back Paganism. Or....transcendentalism...
Here's a purpose for the question: Judgements are bad regardless. An athiest not liking that a Christian believes in something false is completely ridiculous considering if the athiest is correct it doesn't matter what the Christian believes anyway. I've rarely met a true Athiest, one who...
No I do not think Group 3 is more mature. The only way to classify which person (as I wouldn't classify the group) is more mature lies in who has more respect for the other persons beliefs. The post was a ponder this question. I have no other comment on Groups 3 and 4 as they were not part of...
Helios -
First question, is your dad a dentist? Second question, suppose we know there are two kinds of people:
Type one: Doesn't believe in an afterlife. Has feelings of fear about death and inquires the unending question "What is the point of this?" When loved ones die has nothing but...
"In fact, very few UUs believe in a continuing, individualized existence after physical death. Even fewer believe in the physical existence of places called heaven or hell where one goes after dying. We believe immortality manifests itself in the lives of those we affect during our lifetime and...
ps. Apparently I'm not sure how this works yet, b/c I meant to post my reply in the folder where somebody asked why aren't there more UU's.....can I still do that?
Hi Runty - where did you get the blurb on evil existing? That one makes me a bit uneasy. I personally don't believe in the concept of evil, sin, or hell. I know my mom does somewhat. We're both Unitarians. And the bilaws are always changing at GA and the principles were voted on etc etc, so...
