    It is a measurement for any object with a velocity. For example, a bullet travelling at 500 m/s would take 6E5 years to travel 1 ly. It just so happens that for photons in a vacuum the conversion factor is 1.

    A light year is the DISTANCE that light will travel in one year. If you were pulled over by the police and they asked you how fast you were going, would you say, "30 miles"? If not, then why did you say that c, the speed of light, is 3E8 meters? Speed is distance over time, not just a distance.
