Question on Sikhism - nature of shabd

Thank you for the link, I'll check it out. Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji is a tricky book to read cover-to-cover, but has some really beautiful poetry, too, as I'm sure you're well aware.

Question on Sikhism - nature of shabd

I'm unfamiliar with that poetry, and don't know much about the Radha Soami - I'll look them up. Are you familiar with Sikh Gurbani (scripture)?

Question on Sikhism - nature of shabd

Friend, you've surely picked a complex topic! One of the most difficult to explain, and understand, in Sikhi. I've pondered a response for you for the past hour, typed out two pages of a textbook, deleted it, Googled for hints, and I'm still at a loss. Shabad does mean simply a hymn, or...

Are meat and bhaang disallowed in Dharmic religion?

The only restriction to Sikh diet is that amritdhari Sikhs can't eat meat slaughtered in the Muslim way (ref Sikh Rehat Maryada section on Amrit Sanchar). I don't know why so many Sikhs are vegetarians. I'm not aware of SGGSJ explicitly prohibiting alcohol or drugs. Nihang Sikhs have a...

Why do religious wear special hats?

99.9% correct, sir. I know of one sect where the turban is mandatory, but generally its seen as part of the uniform for male Sikhs to manage their long hair, and also to make them stand out as Sikhs. Not sure it means today what it used to, though..

    Deidre's Journey

It took a couple of months for my mind to stop automatically chanting Waheguru.. Waheguru... but you'll come out of the habit, too. Have you considered looking into different philosophies instead of religions to fill the gap? Some philosophies come with quasi-spiritual exercises like meditations.

    Concept of Charity in Religion

RaginPagan, do you think that second stanza is an encouragement to spend/use wealth and generosity sooner rather than later, because the person you're saving it for, that person who is your friend, could become your foe? I may not be understanding it, I'm new to this poetry. Thanks!

Why modern Stoicism misses the point (article)

Yes, but we're talking about traditional Stoicism vs modern Stoicism, and Nietzsche's criticism can be applied to modern Stoicism moreso than the traditional because Nietzsche neglects the divine in his criticism as much as modern Stoics do in their Stoicism. The quote is a device to further...

Why modern Stoicism misses the point (article)

I think the author built himself a little strawman with his extrapolation and is calling on a philosophical definition of mechanistic materialism. I don't know much about it, but the wiki gives a bit of a primer: Mechanism (philosophy) - Wikipedia . The far reach to 'scientists' just tripped...

Why modern Stoicism misses the point (article)

If you want to start a new thread to discuss whether or not Stoicism is a religion, please feel free. This thread, however, is meant to be about the relevance (or not) of God within the frame work of Stoic philosophy.

Why modern Stoicism misses the point (article)

When you say "..from what I've read, this requirement for god isn't necessary." do you mean in terms of Stoic practice? If so, that precise point is a) what modern Stoicism currently promotes, and b) is what the article is arguing against. The article is saying that by removing God from...

Why modern Stoicism misses the point (article)

I admit to being a bit confused by your posts. Stoicism is a philosophy, and back in the day, classical Stoics up to Marcus Aurelius were practicing Roman and Greek Paganism. Although, their belief in the Logos (the Whole, would say Marcus), seems different than what you'd expect from a Roman...

Why modern Stoicism misses the point (article)

Oh okay. The author has taken Nietzsche's lead there and then says it's the same version of nature that "scientists" today agree with, which isn't actually what Epictetus understood nature to be, at all. I ask a question: If Nature isn't divine reason and Providential, how could nature be...

Why modern Stoicism misses the point (article)

Hi Shunya What part of the article are you referring to by 'if nature is...'? Nietzsche held no love for Stoicism, and the paragraph quoted is part of his writing in criticism of it. I agree with the author of this article, though. Nietzsche appears to understand Nature in a way the...
