Every sermon I ever heard, every creationist teaching I've read, says man was created out of dirt. And while it does say god breathed into man "the breath of life" (presumably the spirit), the physical composition was still dirt.

I'm not sure how this slipped under the radars, but this is disgusting, especially the Buddhist student who faced harsh discrimination at this school. And remember, this is a public school, not a private one.
We've all seen the many threads discussing the topic of are Christians persecuted in the US, which most of us are aware that they are not. However, I haven't seen any threads discussing the topic of atheist persecution in the US. I know that the word persecution sometimes sets people off, so...
It depends on how you define fundamentalism. To a Christian or Muslim, fundamentalism simply describes the basic tenets of one's faith. To an outsider, fundamentalism generally is a derogatory denotation. It's this second definition that is generally in mind when people say "atheist...
Sure. Let me start off by saying that this is just my opinion.
Defintions of god that include some sort of immanence, while they should have some sort of logic, often do not. Think of the Christian god, who is said to be in the world; does this god make sense? Not to me. Even pantheism...
It's interesting that I haven't gotten any answers, but then again, it's not an easy question. The Lotus Sutra is highly metaphorical, and it's teachings aren't often found on the surface. While the Lotus Sutra does teach about meditation (mostly it's importance, not necessarily a method, at...
This pretty much sums up my ideas about it as well. Religion isn't necessary to prop up and stabilize society, but it's what has been normally used. Even religions that tend to deny the importance of a society as a whole have eventually been used, or many times duped, into holding up society.
This is a good point, and would include debates about abortion and homosexual marriage. If you don't like it, if you don't believe it's right, don't do it. That's one of the prices that religions have to pay to live in a free society.
It really depends on how you define god. IMO: a god that is in any way imminent, should have some sort of reason, and should in some way be logical, while a god that is completely transcendent, doesn't really have to follow any logic. Ironically enough, it's the definitions of god that include...
No, just the opposite. It sounds to me like you're suggesting this, however.
I'm not worried about what the bible says, I'm not a Christian. And I'm having some trouble trying to figure out what you're saying.
What I'm saying is this: a religious organization should not be required to...
So if it becomes federal law that homosexuals do have the right to be married, do you think churches should have to perform ceremonies for them, even if they disagree theologically with the practice?
It's not easy to give an answer. My idea is that, with churches having tax exempt status, they need to stay out of government affairs. As long as they do this, then they should be exempt from the law.
Many, if not most religions, rely to a great extent on their respective scriptures. Believers will almost always give deference to their scripture, even when dealing with topics that aren't of a religious nature. This is to be expected, but when is it time to stop?
Believers often expect...
I've seen many debates between science and religion, I've participated in a few of them. And I've began noticing something, especially when the topic is creationism against evolution and abiogenesis.
We have two groups of thought, each arguing their point from a differing underlying...
