    Buffet religion or Jesus Christ

I agree with some of what you've said. I'd counterpoint with the fact that many Christians (absolutely myself included) also buffet their Christianity. Have a whole lot of grace but hold the sin convictions, sprinkle in some basically-secular-at-this-point holidays and some catchy scripture...

Sikh Queenslanders allowed to carry ceremonial knives in schools after court ruling

Just FYI. Generally, no Sikh should marry a second wife if the first wife is alive. Does anyone take the Rehat Maryada seriously? [Edit: this is a serious question because maybe my perception as someone who isn't from that country is incorrect, and that in reality it's just not as important as...

Hello. I can't reply to your question, sorry. In 2019 I discovered the incomparable joy of a relationship with Jesus, and stopped trying to be a Sikh. I can no longer post in the Sikh DIR, and much of my Sikh knowlegde has become rusty.

Sikh Queenslanders allowed to carry ceremonial knives in schools after court ruling

I pasted resources about the kirpan earlier in the thread. And of course, all deserve equal opportunity to prove themselves worthy over time. I didn't say they don't. There were lots of people killing each other when the Sikhs took up arms. It was also a different time period and different...

Sikh Queenslanders allowed to carry ceremonial knives in schools after court ruling

The reason is the same as it is for initiated Sikhs everywhere to carry it. I think you understand the concept of something earning credibility and people being able to demonstrate the worthiness of a thing. Enduring over time and proving worthy over time is one factor.

The Sikhs have demonstrated a reason to have it. They've earned it.

Also, initiated Sikhs carrying kirpan is not silly when you consider where the tradition came from. Go learn something about Sikh history and get back to me, Koldo.

Sikh Queenslanders allowed to carry ceremonial knives in schools after court ruling

Ironically, Sikhs do not practise circumcision, and initiated Sikhs are forbidden from eating meat that is slaughtered according to Islamic ritual.

Sikh Queenslanders allowed to carry ceremonial knives in schools after court ruling

Hi Esteban. You're understanding is close! Khalsa Sikhs are supposed to defend anyone who can't defend themselves. Sikh or non-Sikh. Here's more about the kirpan specifically What is a Kirpan? - Blog Post

Anyone who wants more information on the Sikh side of things, here's a summary of the duties of the Khalsa Sikhs (the amritdhari, initiated Sikhs) from the SGPC, which is the primary governing body of mainstream Sikhi: Duties of the Khalsa – Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee If you want...

Sikh Queenslanders allowed to carry ceremonial knives in schools after court ruling

I guess anyone could make such a declaration about their religion. If a court would take it seriously is another matter. I hope common sense would prevail, but if you're talking about America, well.........

Can they demonstrate any official religious basis for their claim, that for the purpose of this comparison, they make a vow to carry? Sikhs have been making this vow for 300 years.

Sikh Queenslanders allowed to carry ceremonial knives in schools after court ruling

Technically tiny kirpan charms would suffice. However, the purpose of the kirpan is to defend the defenceless. A Khalsa Sikh (an initiated Sikh) is a soldier-saint. Their initiation is meant to be into an army. Ideally the kirpan would be long enough and sharp enough to be a useful weapon if...

Sikh Queenslanders allowed to carry ceremonial knives in schools after court ruling

We'll need a bit more clarity as the article basically says that schools can still ban students from carrying knives. If it's just adults visiting the school, that's fine. @Callisto I think you'll find the Canadian violence is mostly, if not entirely, Khalistani-related. These are a group...
