$100 million Muslim center planned 2 blocks from Ground Zero.

To tarnish tea partiers with this bad example is just a tad bigoted. The movement has nothing to do with Islam as I see it. It's
about too much government. Should all lefties have the Unabomber as their poster child? Enuf of the histrionic partisanship already.

At least, as a socialist liberal, I have the good sense to vocally condemn the Unibomber and anyone else who would use violence or hate speech to advance their agenda. Be they left or right.

But back to the Mosque, I still see no problem with an established religious organization building a place of worship in an available lot two blocks away from ground zero.
We need to realize that Islam is not the enemy. Religious zealots are.

Agreed. If the locals are stupid enough to allow it, BFD, American will largely ignore the building and Muslims, as usual.
Personally, if it were up to me, I would not allow the construction of any kind of mosque, anywhere.

We need to realize that Islam is not the enemy. Religious zealots are.
On the other hand, Islam can hardly be described as a friend of the unbeliever, so your statement isn't much of a comfort.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof....

Applies to ALL religious beliefs.

I would be happy if a another Fundamentalist Evangelical church was never built. But they have the right to do so anyway.

Personally, I think it would be an insult to build a mosque or any other religious center at ground zero. But especially a mosque as it was at the hands of radical muslims that took the lives of thousands of Americans. If they do build a mosque there it will be an absolute affront!

Never forget, never forgive!

Sounds good to me!

Again. There are no plans to build a Mosque at Ground Zero.

Would there be the same response if a Fundamentalist Christian Church was built near the site of the Olympic Park bombing? Or on the same block as the site of the 1985 bombing of an abortion clinic in Pensacola, Florida?

You should read the rest of the thread. Hopefully then you'd realize why this would not be an affront or an insult at all. But you are a perfect example of why they are planning to build the mosque near ground zero.

My response would be the same if a Christian church was built on the site where a fundamentalist xtian nut job bombed an abortion clinic. I would deem in completely inappropriate.

Reason, and reason again
Even if that church was a pro-choice denomination like Presbyterianism?

Context is key. There will always be people who are hypersensitive. A lot of people want to feel victimized or besmirched. Just the other day I was reading a ludicrous post on another forum that argued any video game which has a white person killing a black person is racist. Thankfully the constitution does not cater to the whims of rigid moralists.

Thousands upon Thousands Protest 911 Mega Mosque at Ground Zero: “Not Now, Not Ever!” | Stop Islamization of America

Apparently the protest was organized by a group called Stop Islamization of America, whose website is the second link above.

I see why some people see this as an insult. Unfortunately, if their wishes are met and the mosque is not built, it flames religious discrimination in my mind. Your average Muslim is nothing like the jihadist behind 9-11. Stupid people need to get that fact through their thick skulls. Acquiescing to their ignorance won't help.

I prefer for the US to remain a place of religious freedom. Building the mosque is cool with me.

Well, these people are complete lunatics. But you can't say you didn't see this coming. Lunacy is something we can always count on.

I know, that's the depressing part. We're going backwards in the discrimination department and in some respects it's kind of shocking to me. Especially living on the West Coast.

I've been getting emails about this subject from relatives as well. Of course the links they send are from Fox News sites. What I wish is that we could bomb Fox News off the air. :D

Another thing about this....two blocks in Manhattan ISN'T necessarily that close in relation really. I mean, if anyone has ever been to NYC, you can be in a whole 'nother world two blocks away.

From Salon
At one point, a portion of the crowd menacingly surrounded two Egyptian men who were speaking Arabic and were thought to be Muslims.
"Go home," several shouted from the crowd.
"Get out," others shouted.
In fact, the two men – Joseph Nassralla and Karam El Masry — were not Muslims at all. They turned out to be Egyptian Coptic Christians who work for a California-based Christian satellite TV station called "The Way." Both said they had come to protest the mosque.
"I'm a Christian," Nassralla shouted to the crowd, his eyes bulging and beads of sweat rolling down his face.
But it was no use. The protesters had become so angry at what they thought were Muslims that New York City police officers had to rush in and pull Nassralla and El Masry to safety.
"I flew nine hours in an airplane to come here," a frustrated Nassralla said afterward.

Part of me feels sorry for them and part of me thinks..."well, you're no better than those you're trying to join forces with so you kind of reap what you sow".

Well. I suppose the matter should be down to the district or city that the mosque would be in and have a democratic election amongst it's inhabitants. (LOL)

No, seriously though. I think these 'protesters' have some seriously poorly channeled political energy.

I'm opposed to the mosque at Ground Zero!

Putting a mosque at Ground Zero is almost like putting a "German Cultural Museum and Bratwurst Shop" at Auschwitz. Not the same, because 9/11, as bad as it was, was nowhere near the scale of the Holocaust.

Well, if you actually knew the facts, you would see that there are no plans to build a Mosque at Ground Zero.
