Homophobes? I do believe Tel Aviv has a week long Pride celebration. Israel allows infinitely more personal freedom than any of the Palestinian territories would ever contemplate.

The different name is to separate it from the conflict involving other nation states. For example Germany's invasion of the USSR is called the German-Soviet War as the USSR was not part of allies at the beginning of WW2. The 2nd Sino-Japan war, 37, became part of WW2 when Japan joined the Axis.

Can it be countered with "I have 2 friends in Israel and believe me the government is not bad"?
The phrase "the government is bad" is so empty that it needs to be abandoned. The government is a complex mechanism full of politics and individuals. If people have a problem with policies then they should talk about policies. If they have a problem with particular politicians, then they should talk about particular politicians. But this phantom notion of "the government" doesn't allow for productive discussion.
