Coming on the heels of wave of bomb threats against Jewish Community Centers across the US, the desecration of Jewish cemeteries in the St. Louis and Philadelphia areas is disheartening and gives one serious pause.
The only heartening aspect is that in both instances the local Muslim communities have stepped forward to offer assistance.
Demonstrating -- sadly, but perhaps hopefully -- what I think that you I and both understand: whatever their faiths (or lack thereof), there are some bad people, and more good ones. This is something that I have actually and truly believed for most my life (and as I think you know, I had some reason for doubt).
Those Muslims that have stepped forward to help (as have Jews in Israel stepped forward to help Palestinians) demonstrate how they see themselves in terms of "community." My "community" includes more than just atheists, gay people, men, white guys (with a little mix of Mohawk).
Sadly, it's my feeling that the "populist" politics of todays, all around the world, is making us all fearful, and as Franklin said: "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither." Yet, the Donald Trumps, the Marine Le Penns, the Geert Wilders and too many others of the world are trying to take us all there. And that suggests to me that it won't be getting better for quite some time.
That both saddens me, and possibly makes me feel a little glad that I'm old enough that I might miss some of the worst of it. May your great grandchildren inherit better.
