6-year-old student shoots teacher in Virginia classroom, police say

At the very least if the gun came from the home, the parents should be charged for the crime and for endangering the welfare of a child.

6-year-old student shoots teacher in Virginia classroom, police say

"NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — A 6-year-old student shot and wounded a teacher at his school in Virginia during an altercation inside a first-grade classroom Friday, police and school officials in the city of Newport News said"......

"Drew said the student and teacher had known each other in a classroom setting. He said the boy had a handgun in the classroom, and investigators were trying to figure out where he obtained it. The police chief did not provide further details about the shooting, the altercation or what happened inside the school"......

"The police chief did not specifically address questions about whether authorities were in touch with the boy's parents, but said members of the police department were handling that investigation"......

They don't know how he got the gun? So they don't know for certain it came from his parents. Maybe he found it somewhere else.

One would think it wouldn't be too hard to figure out where the gun came from. Its not like a 6 year old has many options to obtain a gun.

Still, without much information, it's hard to know for certain. Does the kid have older siblings who might be in a gang? Does he live in a rough neighborhood where neighbors or family friends might have guns? Granted, it's most likely the case that it came from the parents, but we don't know for absolute certain.

Which is why I said "At the very least if the gun came from the home,"

From another link...

"The incident took place during an altercation between the teacher and the student, police said without providing more details.

Drew told reporters that the incident was "not an accidental shooting," and it didn't appear that student and teacher knew each other beyond the classroom environment......

A representative for the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives told ABC News the agency is assisting in the investigation by tracing the firearm that was recovered on the scene"......

For me, the interesting part is a six-year-old bringing a gun to school and deliberately shooting somebody. When children this age fire guns, it's usually an accidental discharge, one as likely to harm themselves as anybody else. It sounds like this kid had intent to harm even if that was only in self-defense, since he used it during an altercation. This reminds me of the discussion of the youngest age at which a child can commit suicide. At what age do people first have such ideas. I would have thought older than six.

Sadly, kids are exposed to a lot of subjects and scenarios that they shouldn't be. Some parents don't care to shelter kids from ugly situations, if they think of them at all. Could be the same type of homes where babies get shaken and kids get abused. They are taught to deal with conflict with violence.

After the fact not preventing the shooting.
Some think we have no gun laws.
Some think we have too few, & they want more...any kind, just more.
Some want to confiscate various or all guns in private hands.
I'd rather see better (ie, more useful) regulation.

Hey, America is a gun-loving culture, and culture is available to children as soon as they are able to process language. America's children learn what America teaches them. Live with it.

Student violence against teachers is rampant. It shouldn't take the weapon being a gun to get the public's attention.

The age of the child raises a lot of questions for me. One is how a child could know how to use a gun. Another is if it was a small gun, because some, like semi-autos, have big grips and some adults have hands too small. And then to aim and shoot and hit your target is not that easy. My guess is the kid had experience with guns, even if through video games.

Twilight Hue

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
Why do people act like a six year old really knew what was going on and was aware of repercussions from his actions?

It's a six year old child for christ sake and I agree how he got possession of a firearm should be addressed and looked into.
