New York (CNN) -- An 8-year-old boy, who was repeatedly stabbed at a Long Island, New York, restaurant, was recovering from a punctured lung and other wounds Saturday, police said.

The boy was spending time with his family at the Dave & Buster's in Westbury when he was attacked by a 23-year-old man who approached him from behind, police said. The man placed his left hand on the victim's shoulder and stabbed the boy five times with a three-and-half-inch folding knife, police Lt. Kevin Smith told reporters.

Wow. You can't even take your kid to the damn ice cream shop these days. That dad is way more decent than I would've been.

Obviously the appropriate response is to ban knifes and all other sharp, pointy objects.

Seriously though I wonder what the motive was, and what could warp a mind to the extent of being capable of harming a child.

No, no, no. Democrats stab you in the back, Republicans stab you in the privates. Much larger blood loss, with a far greater likelihood of fatality.

I'd like to think that he was malfunctioning, but people have done far worse.

I'm guessing there were probably a few things that should have seemed off about the guy. Or maybe he is a veteran who suffers from a severe case of PTSD and something about the game triggered the reaction and the aren't mentioning that for whatever reason. But I'm guessing most likely the assailant has some very serious mental issues.

I suppose so, but there must have been some life altering event. I'm just trying to imagine why he would have picked that day, and specifically, Dave & Buster's.. and specifically a kid as outlined in a note. It just makes no sense. The intention is like.. a blank slate.
