9 Nights: A Journal

Tomorrow is the first day of Navaratri, a festival dedicated to Ma Durga, or various other forms of Devi. I am starting this journal tonight, to help me reflect on the festival, the outer celebrations, the inner meanings, and communion with those also celebrating(or those just curious).

Tonight is a bit of preparation. I've been taking stuff down and dusting for the upcoming pujas. We're not really sure why, but while we do most of our pujas in the puja room, during Navaratri we do them in the living room on a set of three shrines used only during Navaratri.

When we started looking to buy our house, my husband said a prayer to Lakshmi asking her to help us find a good place we could afford. He told her if she did, he'd build her a nice altar right in the living room. Granted. Not only did she find us a house large enough to have two rooms for spiritual purposes(plus enough for the kids to have their own rooms), she managed to do it at about $20,000 under budget, essentially taking us out of poverty. While she had a small altar in the 'quiet room' at our old house(we had no bedroom, we gave it up in order to have a quiet room that was free of Ares and slept on the dining room floor), she is the focus of all who enter in this house. While she is in the center, on each side there is a considerable wall altar for Durga and Saraswati as well.

I've been making some torans with paper kalashes and mango leaves over the last week. I was hoping to have them up today, but due to the construction going on, I wasn't able to make that happen. Tomorrow, I guess.

But the big thing I'm prepping for is the fast. My husband and I fast through Navaratri; in the past its been with traditional fasting foods. This year, however, I'm kicking it up a notch. The plan is the first three days liquid only, the second set of three days raw foods, and the last three traditional fasting foods. (My husband is not doing this; he is just doing the traditional fasting foods.)

Typically, the first three days of Navaratri are dedicated to Durga. In order to go without eating during this period, I'm really going to need her strength to pull this off. I'm hoping she may bless me with some of her warlike energy, as I face my own personal battle with food.

Hey George,
On your interview thread you asked if I was ready for Navaratari.

I'm finishing writing my prayers to Duurga and Indian Supermodel Nafisa Joseph. I will pray that prayer each day for nine days. I will fast as in eat less, but I'm not sure how that will go. I will definitely avoid all junk food and eat mainly fruit I think. I have to have nutrition because of my mental illness though

In the Catholic Church that 9 days of the same prayer is called a Novena. I will remember you in my prayers. I will be praying many prayers in the courtyard as well as go to Mass and receive holy Communion for a greater Durga and offer her the treasures of the Mass and Holy Eucharist. I will also pray a Rosary for Durga to have an alliance with the Blessed Virgin Mary, and for a greater Durga, and the triumph of the Divine Feminine. I will also pray to Kali Ma!

I know, sounds crazy kinda. But I'm crazy, kinda :p

When I google Navaratri, why does it say it begins on 7th?

Hey George,
You will truly be in my prayers a lot with special mention of you in the written prayers I write during this glorious nine nights. I  U!

I could make a youtube of the prayer but Wifi here doesn't let me upload youtubes until I go to wal mart or something, so who knows.

I don't have my altars because I'm in treatment!

I'm kinda bummed that you are opposed to your deification. You have the goddess within you! :) Claim and walk in your authority. Make of everything you do, every chore, sacrifice, annoyance, suffering, whatever you do or go through, make of it an offering to our Holy Mother Durga.

Much of life is the same chores over and over and over again. They bring much grace to earth when we turn it into a Holy Offering with love! You can't do great things, but you can do little things with great love! :greenheart:

Definitely be careful not to overdo it when fasting! Avoiding junk food is probably a good call. Ma Durga doesn't want us to do ourselves damage.

I hope your prayers bring you joy and peace! :) None of it sounds crazy to me.

When it begins depends on what part of the world you're in. I remember you said your in MN. This is the calendar regarding festival dates for you:2021 Shardiya Navratri Calendar for Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States When you see it says it starts the 7th, that's probably meant for India, being as that's where most Navaratri celebrations are taking place. It also starts the 6th for me, too.

Hey George,
Thanks for the clarification so that I know in the future to check for that. :)

What is Durga riding in your avatar? Is it an Aries (Ram)?

We've all got a bit of her in us(yes, men do, too).

This is my goal in life; thanks for the reminder. I want everything I do to be an act of worship...

You've put this beautifully!

My avatar is Shailputri. :) She is one of the nine forms of Durga, and is traditionally worshipped by some on the first night. She is riding a bull.

Goddess Durga,
Most Benevolent, Tender, strong, most pure, most mighty, most beautiful, most unfathomable, most incomprehensible, most compassionate, the epitome of what a Mother should be and glory of Motherhoood....

You treat your worshippers like a Mother treats her children. Give George the strength she needs in these times of fasting and prayer. May she grow ever so much closer to you. George has been so helpful to me. Bless and reward her abundantly, beyond her wildest expectations.

Thanks for the reminder, I did not know it yet:greenheart:

Yesterday, coincidentally I bought 4 kg of fruits:tangerine::pineapple::pear::melon::lemon::greenapple::watermelon::redapple::cherries:, mostly those I never buy (oranges and grapefruits and mandarins). I used to do lots of fruit fasting in the past, now I do another cleansing, but, maybe a hint of Durga to do it again. I was already thinking "how I am going to finish all these fruits". Now I know, just less cooked food for a few days:)

I wish you a marvelous Navaratri:cool:

For a few years I have done the "physical altar" stuff mentally. Just going through my ritual mentally, eyes closed. I really liked doing it that way

I felt that this was a kind of "you have the goddess within you" way of doing it

That is what Sai Baba has been teaching us, over and over again. That is all we need to do, He said, and you get all the Lord's Blessings/Grace

Thank you. There is only 1 fruit I use nowadays to "fruit cleanse", because I found out it works ca. 6 times faster then any other fruit. But the other fruits are a nice addition.

I just remember now that this morning just before I started my day, around 4 'o clock, I heard a voice tell me "cherry pie". That must have been Durga, giving me a hint to eat not too much fruits/food (yesterday I ate 430 gram of blueberry pie). So, today I will try her recommendation "cherry pie", and try (Sai Baba always says "don't say I'll try, just do it"), okay, today I'll eat a bit less:). But those pies are great. Almost no oil, no nuts, no salt, so they kind of are "top food" for my kidneys.:)

I thought Navratri began on the 7th? But I guess technically the OP was made on the wee morning hours of the 6th, so I suppose it could be tomorrow from then. It's definitely tomorrow now.

Anyway, I wish @JustGeorge everyone else who celebrates it a Happy Navratri. May Ma Durga illuminate your life with many blessings.

Here in my area, the celebration of Durga puja starts from 11th or maybe 12th, i'm not sure. Guess i need to check the calender again. It'll go on for 4 consecutive days, which means super sound pollution. lol They'll blast loud music (hardly religious and mostly Bollywood movie stuff) from 7 in the morning to 10:30 in the night and also the young ones would light crackers. Being a solitary peace loving person, it would be a little difficult for me to read books or listen to relaxation music in the midst of all that noise. But hey, it only comes once in a year. So i guess its ok for people to enjoy a little.
They serve khichdi (spiced lentil-rice) on the last day. I used to have them but not anymore due to fear of covid. :)

I think it depends where you are. I thought it was the 7th, too, at first, until I looked at my temple's calendar and saw it starts the 6th for my area.

Technically, I think I made the post on the 5th, so tomorrow is now today, and that's the 6th...

Too many numbers in the morning confuse me. (Heck, too many numbers anytime confuse me.)

I’m guessing they’re going by IST.
