Hi Rival,
I’m no expert but I do think that within Judaism there are definitely different understandings.
Where Maimonides says magic etc is not real, most medieval Jewish authorities were of the opinion that it is.
Most Orthodox Jews I know tend to be more rationally minded and dismissive of the woo-woo. But it’s not relevant to practice, so it kind of doesn’t make a difference religiously whether or not someone believes these things are real.

There are also many laws (Halacha) which take bad spirits and demons into account, so for the most part that would have been accepted as a reality in Talmudic times. I can’t remember where, but there is a source somewhere that says that although demons are real as a general rule they do not mess with people anymore.

As far as my amateur understanding goes, there are 3 things I would address:

1: Manipulating spiritual forces/ energies (or consulting with someone who does) to your benefit runs contrary to ״תמים תהיה עם הי אלקך״ - You should be simple/ pure. Basically, to trust God is running the show, has your best interests in mind and turn to Him in prayer or with good deeds if you want to change things.
Practicing witchcraft/ magic or consulting with a sorcerer breeds a culture where God is forgotten in favor of people attempting to play God themselves. (And while at it, they get to be called “spiritual” too.)
I don’t know if it matters whether or not someone believes the manipulation is supernatural or not.

2. Negative spiritual forces vs positive spiritual forces.
As a Jew, I believe God is the source of everything and any kind of force, whether it manifests as good or evil, is working as an agent of God.
That being said, negative spiritual forces are definitely considered real. Impurity (tumah) also factors into Halacha a lot, and although that may not be the energy you have in mind, it’s another example of negative spiritual energy. Additionally, impure forces are said to be created when a person sins. (I’m sorry, I don’t remember the source for that offhand.)

3. Finally, even great people are cautioned strongly when it comes to practical Kabbalah. Even a stray impure thought can taint the origin of the energy being channeled, created or whatever it is.
There are different ways to go about handling the spiritual- from a place of purity or impurity.
And depending on that it’ll either be called a miracle or black magic.
To reiterate, coming from a pure place primarily means having pure intentions for the sake of God and being a pure vessel - a holy person of good character who fears God etc. doing whatever their doing fully within the context of Halacha.

This is a difficult topic actually :)
Do i believe in witchcraft? No, not in the modern sense of wistchcraft. but i do believe some very trained spiritual people can cultivate a form of ability that would look like witchcraft to others.

Do i believe demons exist? Both yes and no. I believe demons can arise from very imoral thought form, so it means the demon come from within our mind.

Curses: I do not know if those would work on others.

Spirits: Yes but how it works and what form of spirits they are, that i do not understand yet

When I was growing up I watched a movie with Salma Hayek, and her spirit used to visit me.

There are lots of troublesome verses in The Bible. Presumably that one got quite a run out in the 17th Century when witches were being burned. And perhaps before that. So that one verse from Exodus is probably responsible for many crimes committed in the name of God. And there have been many. I would suggest that here was a case of wilful misinterpretation or manipulation of a text, for unscrupulous purposes, by the likes of Matthew Hopkins (England’s Witchfinder General).

Do i believe in witches who have power over people? An African colleague asked me once, when we were listening to a discussion about Halloween on the radio, if England really celebrated a holiday for witches. The term “witch” meant different things to us both in this context, I think.

A friend of mine, when she was young and homesick, and desperate to return to England from Brazil, attended a Macumba ceremony in the backstreets of a Favella in Rio.
The lady performing the ceremony told her to sleep with a candle and a glass of water beside her bed every night, and she would soon cross the oceans. She did, and it worked.

So, in your opinion, how would you interpret this Biblical passage:

You shall not allow a sorceress to live
IMO:
IF this was written ca. 2000 years ago
THEN we know that they believed all kinds of things

Some even believed the earth was flat
And probably wrote that down too
Sorcerors is not that strange
Compared to flat earth

And fear can do funny things in human mind
Even my dog 'saw' a ghost where it was in reality just a cow (5:00 very dark and foggy, so can't blame the dog. I had my glasses on, otherwise I maybe had seen a ghost too:D)

In India they have a similar story with snakes (we just have cows and dogs)
The mind easily superimposes a snake where in reality it's just a rope

BUT I know and have experienced instant magic, healing (white magic), so I would be surprised if there is no black variant.

BUT you need a certain level to be able to do it (esp. on others). Not many have this in Kali Yuga, esp. the internet era. 2000 years ago there might have been even more (no internet distraction, more meditation)

Curses can work, because "Word" is powerful, and impacts the mind which creates easily stuff

Demons and a literal Satan are part of my worldview as a Baha'i.

That's interesting because it contradicts what I have been told by another Baha'i concerning the serpent in the Garden of Eden and the subsequent existence of Satan and Demons. Both, according to this other Baha'i are the lower part of our nature.

Did your dog tell you that it had seen a ghost? or was that just an opinion also.
Interestingly I know someone who said that his dog could sense something evil, maybe a spirit, and barked and would not go there.

Hello Rival.

Whilst, I believe these things above exist I have different reasons for doing so. I do not believe in white and black magic as two separate entities but believe both come from the same existence.

So I'd ask you the same as I asked Psalm23, how would you interpret, 'Not suffer a sorceress to live'?

:)

Whether the sorceress was real and powerful is probably not the point. Sorcery would have been part of the religions of the Canaanites and a sorceress would have been tempting people to follow after other beliefs and practices.
I believe in demons and that they can have impacts on the lives of people and that some people are inhabited by demons.
When I look at the story of Job I can see that demons can have detrimental impact on the lives of people and so I figure that someone who is into that sort of thing, contacting spirits and working with them could have power to curse others and so be directing demons to do that. This is certainly a way of leading others into other beliefs.
In other cultures the existence of demons is not questioned and it leads people to live in fear of the demons and what they can do and to acknowledge them in their religious practices.

I sensed that one to come
Hence I put 'saw' (quoted) :D

Interestingly I know someone who said that his dog could sense something evil, maybe a spirit, and barked and would not go there.
That happened to my dog, would not move an inch
Except I know the dog's sense was way off
Because I saw it was just a cow

Yes... basically.

If but because I have seen manifestations of the same, certainly I believe we are spiritual in nature and thus there are spiritual beings. If I believe God is a Spirit, it would also be logical that I would believer there are spirits. An eternal life, IMO, also denotes the existence of spirits.

Besides that, I have found the Bible to be reliable.

If further explanation is necessary, please advise.

We're not allowed to admit it, or witches and demons will put curses on us.

Two possible interpretations that I can see.

Witchcraft is forbidden because it is essentially a very dangerous con that takes advantage of people, especially in that it gives the power to manipulate others to the practitioner through fear.

Father Junipero Serra enslaved Native Americans, beat them, killed some, and is now a saint for building California's missions (thus bringing them the word of God).

Couldn't we substitute the word "witchcraft" for "religion?"

So, we could assert:

Religion is forbidden because it is essentially a very dangerous con that takes advantage of people, especially in that it gives the power to manipulate others to the practitioner through fear.

Curses, yes.
Demons, yes.
spirits, yes.
witchcraft, yes.

Because the bible speaks about it.

Yes, definitely.

If these things didn’t have a real danger behind them, why would Jehovah God have set such a harsh penalty - capital punishment - to dissuade people from pursuing them? Deuteronomy 18:10-12

In Exodus 7, we are informed that the force behind those who practiced magic was in opposition to God.

(Satan means opposer / resister)

The following is where my JW POV differs from mainstream Christianity: Since the dead “know nothing” (Ecclesiastes 9:5), the innumerable occurrences where people *are told* they’re speaking to their dead loved ones? If they are not being outright misled by charlatans, then these people are cleverly & subtly being manipulated by spirit demon imposters, pretending to be their dead loved ones.

Anything to keep promoting the lie told to Eve, “You positively will not die!” Keep people thinking that their loved ones who’ve died are ‘still alive in another realm.’ Playing on what people want to believe, anyways. But such a belief is not in harmony with the Bible’s teaching of a future Resurrection. From my understanding after decades of study.

Wicked spirits are quite active, especially with interest in the occult becoming more popular.

No. There is no evidence.

In regards to Christianity, I find it odd that Jesus' miracles were ridiculed as being the work of the devil. It's like it's commonplace at the first century to have raising from the dead and curing the incurable as no big deal. The high priests against Jesus called this blasphemy. Lol.
