The Devil's Advocate
I can joke about God's pink shirt and nipples, but what I really get from the painting is a sense of love and affection between God and Adam. I think that Michelangelo, being the sensuous painter that he was, depicted this love in a physical sense. I do think there are erotic undertones in the painting but I don't think they're meant to be derogatory. Quite the opposite. (The dinky penis, I think was just to protect Vatican sensibilities.)Shoot, he's surrounded by fat little cherubs all around him, wearing a billowy pink shirt, he's nippin', and he's reaching for a naked man with a limp wrist and a tiny penis. This is one ODD picture. Makes you wonder what Michelangelo really thought of God.
