"America is stupid"

Reptillian

Hamburgler Extraordinaire
I'm well aware---had several psych courses myself---and, of course, as a partial jest my remark was only to make the point that those incapable of properly raising kids shouldn't have them in the first place.

I would suppose that "proper raising" is a relative idea, but I agree with you. The problem is that a very large segment of America's (and mankind's) population is composed of such individuals. So obviously there must be a selective advantage within our civilization that promotes being an uneducated nitwit with poor parenting skills. Our goal as a society shouldn't be to prevent those individauls frrom reproducing, but to remove that selective pressure and promote an environment that favors intelligence.

Yeah, but I never found idiots amusing.
Reading this back, it could be interpreted as calling Maher an idiot, which wasn't what I meant. Rather, I agree with him but find it more depressing than funny.

Youtube - Bill Maher

Bill Maher says it best.
America is stupid.
I love the bit about O'Reilly. =P

I am sure this could get a rise out of people even though its a couple years old.
Bill Maher just hits the nail on its head each time.

I promise you that if you give that list of statistics to anybody else in the entertainment industry to read them on camera, they'd be infinitely more entertaining than this shmuck.

He's not funny. He doesn't say anything "best". I cringe when I hear him being referred to as a comedian.

I agree. When I first saw O'Reilly I thought he was a schmuck².

He isn't your type of comedian.
You have to have a particularly look with out bias at religion and politics to get his jokes and be able to laugh.

So, he's not to your taste. That's fine, humor is subjective. That said:
1) Do you have to be so absolute about it? I happen to like him, and that's fine, too.
2) Perhaps you could address his argument, rather than sniping at his talent.

I don't think it's fair to assume he doesn't.

I've done all that. He's still crap. I don't let my personal beliefs get in the way of enjoying comedy. I gave him a real chance and sat through one of his stand up specials. It just wasn't funny.

I do. He thinks he's funnier than he is, and it bothers me.

I don't have an issue with his argument. He certainly doesn't say it best. I think he's terribly overrated. I don't think he's talented.

Even when I agree with Maher (Religulous), I find him snarky, obvious, unfunny & way too self satisfied.

Bill Maher smashes his fingers every time when it comes to conventional medicine.

I can still enjoy his remarks on politics and social issues.

I what I really enjoy is the image of Christopher Hitchens flipping off Maher's audience.

I can handle snarky.... but you hit the nail on the head with the rest.

He is too painfully obvious, unfunny, and self satisfied. When I hear the standup audience giving him applause, it feels like it's because they're just being polite. They know Maher has reached a punchline, and they applaud for the sake of moving things along. He tells jokes to death. Explaining himself over and over. It's not enough that his jokes are about how stupid people are, he assumes his audience is stupid too. And he treats them that way.

I thought it was great when Hitchens said: "Your audience, which will clap at apparently anything, is frivolous."

Even Maher figured this out, when he had to tell his audience: "Let's not applaud every time a liberal says anything."

Come to think of it, Hitchens is more successful at humor and he doesn't even pretend to be a comedian.
