Americans prefer a Muslim over an atheist for president

"Two-thirds of Americans believe it is important for a presidential candidate to have strong religious beliefs, even if those beliefs are different than their own, a survey released on Tuesday found.

The survey of Americans’ attitudes by the nonpartisan Public Religion Research Institute found only one in five Americans would object to a candidate whose beliefs were different to their own.

When asked about specific religious faiths and the presidency, 29 percent of Americans would be uncomfortable with an evangelical Christian in the job, 53 percent would be uncomfortable with a Mormon, 64 percent with a Muslim, and 67 percent would be uncomfortable with an atheist as president."

Of course.
The trick is to become aware of as many of them as possible so that we at least know when we are being biased. :)
True. I was going to post something about the unfairness of prejudice against atheists, but then I realized, Hey, to be truthful, I'm unlikely to vote for an evangelical Christian, at least in part due to his/her religion and the way it often plays out in American politics, so who I am I to call the kettle black?

But yes, the ideal mindframe was expressed by Tamar:

I would like to have a president who is secular, and if religious does not wear his or her religion on their sleeve. I want a president who can separate their religion if they have one from the job.

LOL, but atheists are on a religious forum explaining their religion to me, then saying it's not a religion.

One of our former Prime Ministers attends my wife's church. I had no idea what his religious beliefs were until I glanced down the pew and saw him praying by himself.

I don't know if he felt like he separated his religion from his job, but he sure didn't seem to wear his religion on his sleeve while he was in office.

As your sharp and able intellect surely haven't missed, this is a forum to Discuss, Compare and Debate religions, meaning that being a part of one is far from a requirement.
Thus, what you have been told is actually true: atheism is not a religion but rather the disbelief in a god or gods, making it, perhaps, a philosophical point of view, but not even in the neighbourhood of being a religion.
