An unjust tax that should never have been levied!!

When you tip your waitress at a restraint you may think this money goes to her/him but no; Not so~~~

Government taxes this tip giving him/her even less

This “tax” should be abolished!!

What say you?

U.S. tipping culture needs to die and staff should be paid properly.

The idea behind tipping is that it's supposed to be an extra bonus to encourage fast, friendly service (i.e. rude and/or inattentive waitstaff would get little to nothing), but society's decision on who should and shouldn't be tipped is completely arbitrary, and those that do are paid much less by their employers, making them dependent upon tips.
Another thing that should probably go is excluding the cost of tax from listed prices. I suppose it's done that way to make things appear cheaper than what they'll actually turn out to be.

This! Those who work for tips often are hardly better off than slaves, making paltry hourly wages that make minimum wage poverty wages look extravagantly rich. And lots of people don't tip, or they tip poorly. If they aren't raking in tips--though the employer is required to make up the difference so it comes out to minimum wage--they are in a very hard spot, especially if they work for a place where the tips go into a pot that is divided and goes to all, including those who aren't tipped workers and thus making at least minimum wage. It's a sham that needs to go.

Tipping is income, not a gift.
Income is taxed.

Know what's really bad?
Paying income tax on income you never receive.
There are several scenarios where government does that.

Have you ever worked in such an establishment, like a restaurant?

It's a serious meritocracy. A good server in a well run restaurant can make a ton of money. And a good server can be really choosy about employers. But it can also be an entry level job, requiring little training, where a good worker can prove themselves by doing good work. The pay isn't so dependent on the whims of the employers.

The best wait staff would vehemently oppose doing away with their jobs. Poor quality workers probably would love it.

What's really really bad is that income from hard work is counted as not important compared to income from gambling in the stock market and elsewhere.

One problem for the idea behind tipping is that no matter how good of a server you are, if the kitchen screws up, if it takes forever for the kitchen to prepare meals, or if the janitors and bus-staff don't keep things sparkling, if the owners/managers don't insist on everyone doing a quality job, and treat their employees fairly...tips go down. No fault of the server who depends on the tips...or worse, has to share their tips...

Another way of saying this is more income for less work. Isn't this what everyone wants?

Statistically, stocks when diversified actually has very good returns so no it's not even close to gambling. It just seems like gambling because some people can not properly manage risks.

Or they just get stuck with people tipping change or just a dollar or two. Or a brutal series of no tips at all.

I worked as a server and eat out a lot, I've rarely seen anyone tip under 15%, usually 20+, where do you live?
In high school, I made pizzas.
No one ever tipped us.
No one ever shared.
But that's why we made the big bucks.
A little over a buck an hour....woo hoo!

hey me too! for one summer... and that's true - no tips in the kitchen, but not a bad training? - it's probably what drove me to sea-farin!

I still miss having to eat the 'mistakes' for lunch though :)
