Another Trans Woman Wins Sports Competition

We Never Know

Wasn't quite sure where to put this in political debates...so it landed here.

The reason I am posting this thread is in all the bold text. If you cant beat the boys, go beat the girls. Yes that's my opinion and what I believe.

"Valentina Petrillo underwent a transition in 2019(at 44), changing his name and starting hormone replacement therapy. As a result, Petrillo began participating in women’s athletics, (paralympic women's competition) and breaking several Italian records along the way. Strikingly, Petrillo has won multiple women’s running championships but has never achieved the same level of success in the men’s division."

But he could beat the men. He is in the paralympics because he is blind. He was a competitor in his youth but had to quit at the age of 14 due to the disease that cost him his sight. He started to compete again in the paralympics At the age of 41 and won several national titles:

At age 41, Petrillo was determined to get back into athletics, winning 11 national titles in the men's category.[2][1]

In 2019 Petrillo started a gender transitioning process;[1][8] Petrillo competed for the first time in the Woman's category at the Italian Para Athletics Championships on September 11, 2020, marking the first time in Paralympic sports that a transgender person has been allowed to do so.[2][1][4][5][6][7][8]

The one thing that raises a bit of alarm with me is that she was competing only after one year of hormone replacement therapy. In the Olympics the standard is two years at least.

And if you can't fully convince someone of something with one thread, do beat reporting of thread after thread whenever it comes up in the news, until people's minds are changed... right?
I'm not trying to change anyones mind.
I do not think it is ok for a person, especially one who went through birth to adulthood as a male to suddenly become a female and beat females in their sports competitions

Unfortunately his spiel was false. Eleven national titles as a man before transitioning shows that he could "beat the men".

If they are doing unsportsmanlike conduct, or cis women are getting injured in the process and it's affecting their safety in the sport, is one thing to consider. However, I think allowing trans people to compete and with cis people has its benefits and could bring a new positivity and inclusiveness to the sport, even if some of the world isn't able to look past their personal biases right now on the "issue".

I see what it is. Its their first world metal. Never won a world metal agaist other males.

"I started out better than yesterday, however I had yesterday’s 400 on my legs and when I reached 150 I had to change pace and I couldn’t,” Petrillo told Italy’s Rai network after the race. “I saw the Venezuelan closing in lane one and I tried to recover but there was nothing left to do. It is still another fantastic day.
“My first world medal!”

So he won several national titles as a man. I am not suer if he was the best in Italy or not. He got third as a woman in world competition. And that is recently so it is after more than two years of hormone replacement therapy. This may not be the best example of complaining about transwomen in sports.

You wrote "The reason I am posting this thread is in all the bold text. If you cant beat the boys, go beat the girls. Yes that's my opinion and what I believe." which was false as Sub Zone pointed out. So how could you change anyone's mind?

Are you a high level athlete?

I am mixed on the issue, but it is for national sports federations to decide, and especially women in competition. As a competitive cyclist I have not heard of any women competitors being against trans athletes. There is even a local racer who transitioned and our community was cool with it.

I'm 63. What do you think lol

Do I have athletic victory's under my belt. Sure. Quite a few in track and field when I was younger. From both high school and college.
Btw, that was before they gave out participation trophies.

Isn't false. They had never won a world metal competing against men. Try again.

I am mixed as well. This runner clearly did not change just to win. That was a clear false claim. And the ultimate question is "What is the purpose of sports?" Does one want it open to as many people as possible, or does one want to limit what may be an unfair advantage of have fewer people competing.

It is a new science and will take a few years to work all of the bugs out. But if we do not have trans people competing we will never know what is really fair.

"Does one want it open to as many people as possible,"

Lets do away with male and female. Let all males and females compete as the same. Problem solved.

Or would that decrease the number of people in sports?

That would. You would need to show that opening it to trans people is negative, and that has not been demonstrated yet.
