Reason, and reason again
I'm about to go take my test to acquire a motorcycle license; unfortunately, I still have to build up an account to purchase my first baby. Does anyone have some recommendations?

Yeah.A lot of the low-end bikes seem to be five-Speed. Is that normal?
An old wive's tale, Viker. Most accidents are due to rider stupidity. Don't drive like a wacko and and you'll be fine.
Eugene: How big are you and what kind of riding will you be doing? Motorcycles come in a wide range of sizes and types.
Generally I agree with Quaggie -- start with something fairly small and cheap, that you won't mind dinging a few times.
The secret to surviving the ride:
Only the paranoid survive....they are out to get you:
Deer
Soccer moms
Drunks
Deer
Texting teens

Deer know better than to try that sh-- with me. Soccer moms and texting teens are, however, oblivious to their environment and all who dwell within.
Drunks are just drunk, it's a self imposed idiocy.
Since I stick to back roads I haven't noticed -are texting teens pretty common? And...sorry for the naivete, but what do soccer moms do on the road? Aside from driving kinda slow? I mean, I'm usually a stellar minivan driver, unless all three urchins are in the back, one's spilled a drink, another is yelling at his....ohhhh. Never mind.
Ah.They just make convenient fodder for bikers comic relief. Sometimes they are a bit over cautious. Better that than reckless youths.
I think I live in a state of polite drivers - Minnesotans would nearly get run into ditches before honking their horns. The texting teens aren't everywhere but they are becoming a problem. Really, anyone texting and driving needs their license revoked.
Ah.
And to clarify, I'm a back road biker babe and a highway minivan mom. I have no idea what that combo says.

Oh, and Gene, I don't have any recommendations, but I started on a Ninja, to a Honda 750.
Dammm. You started like that??? I started at 12 on a Suzuki PE. I could only do off-road bikes until 16. My first was a Yami XS650. Then the summer of 86 I was ready for my first hawg. An early 80's XLH883. I kept the Yami for bobbing pleasure, bobbed and tuned it would run circles around the XLH. lol
Well, I haven't ridden since I laid the Honda down last year. I wasn't ready, and I should have had a lot more miles under my belt before trying. I didn't realize how much size affected - well, everything about the experience.
