Any bikers?

I'm about to go take my test to acquire a motorcycle license; unfortunately, I still have to build up an account to purchase my first baby. Does anyone have some recommendations?

If it's your first bike, get something small. I would buy something used in good condition too, since you're probably going to drop it a few times. :D

I would start out with a smaller (125cc) on-off road bike. That way you could practice riding away from traffic.

Um, the Honda Rebel 250 is $3200 new. Go to a Honda dealer to get a good first street bike.

EDIT:
Also, it's light, so good for a test.
Its weight also makes for good storage behind the sleeper if you're a trucker on the road.

A lot of the low-end bikes seem to be five-Speed. Is that normal?
Yeah.
5 speed is the traditional bike transmission. The newer 6 speed or 5 speed + reverse breaks soundly with tradition, and, being a nontraditional design, costs more. Oh, I hope you're familiar with a manual gearbox, cause you'll be using one on a motorcycle.

I can't understand why anyone would choose to ride a motorcycle. It is a rolling, rumbling death trap!

An old wive's tale, Viker. Most accidents are due to rider stupidity. Don't drive like a wacko and and you'll be fine.

Eugene: How big are you and what kind of riding will you be doing? Motorcycles come in a wide range of sizes and types.

Generally I agree with Quaggie -- start with something fairly small and cheap, that you won't mind dinging a few times.

I'm renaming you Captain Obvious.

I third the Quaggie advice.

Deer know better than to try that sh-- with me. Soccer moms and texting teens are, however, oblivious to their environment and all who dwell within.

Drunks are just drunk, it's a self imposed idiocy.

Don't forget coyotes. If they're chasing a rabbit they're oblivious to traffic.

The secret: Pretend you're invisible. At stops, aim between lanes, keep it in gear and watch your mirrors.

Speaking of soccer moms. I'm reminded of this little demotivational poster and memories of early childhood in general. There might be some useful advice somewhere in it for those new to motorbiking. A little pic before I go insane.

The kid on the big wheel in this pic is God. After the pic was taken he vanished. Rumors are that he sits high on his mountain and waits for those with the sacred riddle answered for him.

Since I stick to back roads I haven't noticed -are texting teens pretty common? And...sorry for the naivete, but what do soccer moms do on the road? Aside from driving kinda slow? I mean, I'm usually a stellar minivan driver, unless all three urchins are in the back, one's spilled a drink, another is yelling at his....ohhhh. Never mind.

They just make convenient fodder for bikers comic relief. Sometimes they are a bit over cautious. Better that than reckless youths.

The texting teens aren't everywhere but they are becoming a problem. Really, anyone texting and driving needs their license revoked.

Another word of advice, watch yer **** at off ramps. I got it once like that. Ruined a perfectly great Low Rider and almost lost an arm.

Ah.

And to clarify, I'm a back road biker babe and a highway minivan mom. I have no idea what that combo says.

I think I live in a state of polite drivers - Minnesotans would nearly get run into ditches before honking their horns.

Oh, and Gene, I don't have any recommendations, but I started on a Ninja, to a Honda 750.

Dammm. You started like that??? I started at 12 on a Suzuki PE. I could only do off-road bikes until 16. My first was a Yami XS650. Then the summer of 86 I was ready for my first hawg. An early 80's XLH883. I kept the Yami for bobbing pleasure, bobbed and tuned it would run circles around the XLH. lol

Well, I haven't ridden since I laid the Honda down last year. I wasn't ready, and I should have had a lot more miles under my belt before trying. I didn't realize how much size affected - well, everything about the experience.

There's no way I'd try a Hawg right now!

Displacement is key in learning. It's why I recommend stuff like scooters, to 125's or 250's to learn motorcycles. On/off road bikes are king for teaching and learning. Harley's aren't like the newer stuff and are slower than today's hot rods but to an inexperienced rider they might as well be Heyabusa's. I've been on a Ninja and just recently a new Z1000, they are beasts.
