I just convinced 2 commercial tenants who are liberals (classical) to take the course, get licensed, & buy handguns to carry.

I fired a rented one of those at this place:

Wild West Shooting Centre | Real Guns, Real Bullets!

And put 25 rounds in a two inch circle at eight metres after not firing a handgun for about two years. That, my friend, is a quality firearm. Glocks are accurate if the target is in the same Ford Focus as you, but not much further than that. Crappy balance.

PS If you can hit what you're shooting at, you don't need a sixty round mag. Try using both hands, or keeping your eyes open.

Desert Eagles are terrible hand cannons though! Or so I hear. Maybe that's just the .50 cal that is unwieldy though.

Well, I'm not quite sure I qualify as a liberal but I'm positive the Republicans won't have me anymore.

Either way, I'm a gun owner. As is my wife. And we both spend time teaching our children to shoot.

And Glock makes a fine weapon, if you're into semi-autos (my wife is quite fond of 'em). Personally, I like wheel guns chambered in 357.

Gun control is to me like abortion: if you don't believe in it, don't get one, and otherwise mind your own business.

The gun control panic by hunters, self-defense advocates, etc. stymied much social progress. People were tricked into voting against themselves and as a liberal i have to say it was our own dang fault.

But there's a huge difference between abortion and gun control. If you get an abortion, it only affects you. If you have a gun:

1) It could be stolen and used illegally
2) You could have an accident with the gun and kill or injure someone else
3) You could lose your senses and, in an act of great emotion, use your weapon against a spouse or a friend, etc.
4) In actually drawing your gun to fire upon a criminal, you could potentially shoot and kill someone else

In Canada, gun ownership is common especially where I'm from in northern Ontario, but it's generally all hunting rifles. You can't carry around a gun for self-protection. I grew up around plenty of guns, so they don't scare me, but the thought of millions of strangers walking around, most of them probably armed with a gun, all it takes is one of those people to be mentally off balance to cause a bloodbath.

In Canada, I feel safe walking around on the streets, even at night. I don't feel I need a gun to keep myself safe. I understand crime is higher in the US, and so that might lead to more Americans thinking they need it. Personally, I'm happy with our current gun control system as it does the job of reducing shootings and increasing public safety while at the same time, allowing for hunting and sport shooting. I think it strikes a good balance.

The sort of gun culture that makes it acceptable to have a loaded shotgun at the ready at a Halloween party with kids in attendance is obviously dangerous. The sort of paranoid and mentally unbalanced people whose first reaction is to pull out a firearm when they're not threatened is exactly the sort of scenario that people who are for gun control wish to prevent.

Is everyone mentally unbalanced? No. Are many gun owners law-abiding and responsible? Sure. But the law must apply equally and fairly. Gun control. Use it.

Not that I really care about this issue, but wouldn't prohibition be equivalent to a banning of firearms and laws against drinking and driving would be more the area of mild gun control?

The vast majority of liberals I know are "pro-gun" but also "anti-stupid people being able to own guns". The running joke on facebook was that only crazy people object to having a psych evaluation to keep a gun and was followed by a diagram of all the conservative numbers apposing gun control.

True but with great power comes great responsibility. There's nothing wrong with gun ownership. Proper training is a must. Proper storage is a must. Proper supervision for many is a must.
