Are Atheists treated fairly?

i respect a person's right to believe whatever they want to believe. the only problem i have is when people use their beliefs to impede the rights of others, or try to enforce their morality on the rest of us

Sounds fair enough

There is normally no problem in issues related to personal freedoms

Possibly some conflicts arise in areas which are at the border line between public and private

i know we're here to discuss these matters. but in the real world, in public, religion should be a purely private matter that shouldnt come up. do whatever you want (within the limits of the law) believe whatever you want, just dont expect the rest of us to be ok with it when you try to make your beliefs law.

But that's where part of the problem arises when respect is lost between believers and atheists

The common ground of mutual respect is the only solution, and that includes the respect of others in public

That does not mean we agree with "others" but we respect their personal freedoms

Would you agree with that?

i dont need to agree with other peoples beliefs to respect their right to have them. the problem i have is when people use these beliefs that have no basis in reality to set limits on individual rights in reality. you can believe homosexuality is a sin, and that its an abomination, but so long as you dont infringe on their right to be treated as an equal human being, then even tho your still a bigot in my eyes, i wont have much to be angered about.

are you implying that im lying about that? i didnt just grow up in texas, but RURAL texas, the town i grew up in had only 2000 or so people. how would you expect an openly non-christian to fair in that sort of situation?

I was there too mate ;) I'm not calling you a liar, I just didn't experience that myself, and I was in a very rural situation too.

weird stuff huh? You should give "The Year of Living Biblically" a read. It's incredible - someone actually lived according to the Bible for a whole year. O_O

anyway, are atheists treated fairly? no, but knowing the truth can come at a price.......non-theists can have martyr complexes too?

No, I'm not a fan of Dawkins :) I still believe in a higher power, you see, so that puts me at odds with his philosophy.

i didnt finish the book. i got tired of it. i dont really see the point in reading something that only reafirms what i already believe, whats the fun of that? tho i wouldnt call myself an atheist. im an atheist in the sense that i dont believe in any religion. but i think there may be some sort of higher consciousness? i mean everything is connected on a basic scale.......

It sounds like you're saying we shouldn't discuss such matters irl. Is that really what you meant?

do whatever you want (within the limits of the law) believe whatever you want, just dont expect the rest of us to be ok with it when you try to make your beliefs law.
Do you have a problem when UUs campaign FOR queer marriage on religious grounds?

thats not what i meant.im not saying people shouldnt get together to learn about one another. i meant that it shouldnt be a big deal in the way we treat each other.

yes, i dont think religion should play any role in legislation. gay marriage should be legal for no other reason than its the right thing to do. but thats my opinion, anything that furthers civil rights is ok by me, even if i dont agree with the motive behind it.
