Are GBLT trying to 'hijack the civil rights movement'?

Hijack? It certainly is taking a big chunk of it... But I don't know that you could ever hijack a movment. People will be moved in some ways but not in others, so you just have to go with the flow.

No; they are simply taking advantage of an organ that has the inside track to most governmental and social organizations.

They are doing what any "oppressed" group would do; looking for support through the most organized and powerful group available to them.

You thoughts?

Well ... I just had to quote something from that article:

“The homosexual hijacking of the civil rights movement is an insult to every person who fought against racism and segregation during the 1960s,” said TVC Executive Director Andrea Lafferty. “Homosexuals have no shame when it comes to exploiting every noble social movement in our culture. These radical groups routinely come up with a new ‘holiday’ or special week in order to push their agenda upon the rest of us—and if you protest against this callous exploitation of important historical events, you’re labeled a homophobic bigot.”

So my question is what else do you label a homophobic bigot besides a homophobic bigot? You can't call them a Christian.

Nope, they are not hijacking the movement, just trying to extend and learn form it. They are, at this point, the only group that does not have civil rights. The only reason the GLBT community should feel shame from using comparatives and similar tactics is that they, in the land of the free, should even have to fight.

I'll state this as a general comment. Let the government eliminate your right to fall in love, have consensual sex, and marry someone of the opposite sex, and see how much YOU think it's not a civil rights issue.

Any heterosexual who doesn't see why GLBT rights are very much civil rights needs to first ask himself or herself that question.

Wiktionary definition of hijack: To forcibly stop and seize control of some vehicle in order to rob it or to reach a destination.

To rob the civil rights movement would be to steal the gains that it has made in bringing about equality. Or you could extend that to say it perhaps takes away from the importance of women's or racial issues. Does the desire of GBLT people to obtain equal rights somehow rob from these other issues? I don't see how it could be considered that way. I would say that when the evangelical right says that GBLT issues are 'non-issues', then that constitutes hijacking. So, in my mind, it is the ultra-right who are hijacking the civil rights movement - not GBLT activists. We are simply putting it to its intended use.:rainbow1:

Reason, and reason again
I like to think of the recent religious and sexual preference minorities as being the precursors to the "second civil rights movement."

These radical groups routinely come up with a new ‘holiday’ or special week in order to push their agenda upon the rest of us...
I'm sorry to do this, but to illustrate a point...

Martin Luther King Jr. Day (3rd Monday in Jan)
Idaho Human Rights Day (ID Only, Jan 19)
Civil Rights Day (NH Only, Jan 19)
Black History Month (February)
National Freedom Day (Feb 1)
Daisy Gatson Bates Day (Arkansas Only, Feb 16)
Women's History Month (March)
International Women's Day (March 8)
César Chávez's Birthday (CA, CO & TX Only, Mar 31)
Emancipation Day (DC Only, April 16)
Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month (May)
Juneteenth (June 19)
Women's Equality Day (August 26)
National Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept 15 - Oct 15)
Indigenous Peoples Day (Berkeley, CA in lieu of Columbus Day)
Kwanzaa (Dec 26 - Jan 1)

We (GLBTQ) are a part of the civil rights movement, especially strong now since we have so much to make up for where others have made so many advances. We are not trying to hijack or take away from other civil rights needs or advances, only make the advances we need to make to ensure that we as human beings have the same guarantees of equality and freedom.

Andrea Lafferty? That brain dead bimbo is involved in this? Too funny!

I'm sorry, did I miss something or was the Civil Rights movent not about Civil Rights for everyone? Did they only have one group in mind?

Martin Luther King Jr's "I have a dream" didn't just say black people... it said ALL people should be judged by their character, not just one group of people.

I find it telling that the artical is written by a group known for its shall we say "less than noble" views on equality.

And I hate to brake it to them but the GBLT movement was part of the Civil Rights movement from the start... its only now that they are getting thier turn at the helm.

On what basis does this "Traditional Values Coalition" have the authority to decide whether the Civil Rights movement is being hijacked? Who are they speaking for? Who are they accountable to? Did any of them march with Dr. King? Were they part of the Civil Rights movement?

They're just trying to divide and conquer - to pit blacks against BGLT in order to keep both weak. IT WILL NOT WORK.

To quote Rev. Dr. King:
"Injustice ANYWHERE is a threat to justice everywhere."

I never said I was supporting them.
I didn't say you were, Becky. :) You ask for our thoughts and I was giving mine. :p

In reading the quotes from these organizations:

“The homosexual hijacking of the civil rights movement is an insult to every person who fought against racism and segregation during the 1960s,” said TVC Executive Director Andrea Lafferty.

"To compare rich, privileged homosexual lobby groups allied with transsexuals and sadomasochists to brave civil rights crusaders — who risked their lives to advance freedom — insults every black American who overcame real injustice and poverty,” said CWA President Sandy Rios.

And in reading the definition of "hijack" provided by Callmepaul:
To forcibly stop and seize control of some vehicle in order to rob it or to reach a[n alternate] destination.

It seems to me that if the Civil Rights movement is being hijacked by anyone it's by these yahoos who are trying to co-opt its name in order to deny rights to people instead of the full inclusion that has always been the movement's goal.

But it will not work.

The people complaining about the "homosexual agenda" (whatever that is) of today are the offspring of those who reacted violently to Martin Luther King and his marches for equality. Thanks to that great man and his followers, blacks are being integrated into mainstream society and racial bigotry is less and less tolerated. But civil rights didn't end with just one group of oppressed people. The movement continues to fight bigotry, intolerance and oppression in all of its ugly forms. The "dream" of Martin Luther King is still alive and the struggle will continue until everyone is free of slanderous stereotyping. GLBTs have a dream too - not an agenda.
