Are you equipped with a weapon?

I have an air-rifle that I brought on a whim several years ago

But that's totally legal as it is of only a certain calibre and can only propel projectiles with a certain degree of force

I actually want to get rid of it but I'm not sure how

I mean it's not going to be any good in a Zombie apocalypse so what's the point?

Wrap it to hide it when in public and take it to the police station. A cousin just did that with a set of Japanese swords that become illegal later this year when a new law on blade length comes into effect.

Edit. And take someone with you as a witness

I spent my younger years in the UK (where I was born). As a result, I rarely even think about owning a gun. Frankly, the things frighten me. Not in the sense of being threatened by another person, but the way I might feel about having a stick of dynamite lying around the house.

I have lived in the USA for the last 34 years and during that time I can honestly say that there has not been a single situation where I would have felt safer with a gun. Full disclosure, I have never lived in inner cities or other supposedly dangerous places.

I had a friend who was very interested in guns and owned several. He lived way out in the country with a house on 26 acres, so nobody was endangered when he let me try shooting one of his hand guns. I tried to hit a wooden plank from about 15 feet. I fired maybe 15-20 rounds and didn't hit it once. He did the same with the same result. It did little to increase my respect for that gun as a protection, as I imagine a "bad guy" would be more skillful.

It was on fire when I laid down on it.

These are legal weapons, to be clear. They are airguns and they are legal.

Yes, @Eddi wants to get rid. It is illegal to carry a gun in public unless covered and unable to be used. An airgun can easily be mistaken for the real thing, covering it can save a lot of mistaken identity and hassle

I had a gun in my car because I often traveled to a bad part of a particular city, alone. So one time, I was no where near that city, in fact, I was out in the country, and suddenly I noticed that 1) there were no other cars around me and 2) the truck ahead of me kept going slower and slower till it finally stopped. Three white guys who looked like drug abusers hopped out of the truck and began to walk toward my car. All I did was reach over to the glove compartment and hold up the gun. I didn't point it at them or anything like that, I just held it up. They took off like bats out of hell. I was very glad to have it then. I was also very glad not to have to shoot it.

That's the only time I've had to brandish my gun, but imagine how stupid I would feel if I didn't have it. Not to mention, I might have been raped or killed, who knows? Maybe even both!

Where does she live? I mean, her profile says she's from England but I don't know if she still lives there.

"There is no law prohibiting the ownership of baseball bats in the UK – however if brandished in a public place a baseball bat is categorised as an offensive weapon. Brandishment is defined as waving something aggressively, so merely carrying a baseball bat in a public park, for example, would not constitute an offence."

Yeah, but having one is still suspicious

When was the last time you actually saw people playing baseball in the UK?

Yes, I really should do that!

Same here. I am a single woman, and I live alone. I have a security system and a gun but I don't anticipate having to use either. That being said, better safe than sorry.

Though I would probably do better with mace or even a can of wasp spray. Which I do have.

I have a seriously mentally ill and violent brother who has threatened me in the past and who knows where I live. I don't much like that. I would maim him but probably not kill him but then, who knows? I might, if he scared me enough. But I do think the alarm system would probably scare him off. Probably. But I'm not sure, so I have weapons to injure him with. And I'm fine with that.

You have definitely have cause to take whatever precautions necessary for your safety. Good for you.
