What does one's religion have to do with the cases made by these authors?
They are talking about how the claims of Judeo Christian Islamic religion are false. Their case has merit. But it's not that interesting to me as I do not come from such a culture. But I am more interested in the vision of ethics, politics, values, economics that new atheists or secular humanists have which they seek to actualize as a community or as private citizens.

What are thoughts on the viewing of deities as symbols. In my opinion, that makes one a "theist".
Well I dont know. Deities are often used as words ya know like Eros and Thanatos. Eros meaning loveand thanatos meaning death. They are deities but one often uses them as a phrase. SO i dont think thats a problem

Not really. There are arguments against God in general there too! Breaking the spell isn`t about the Judeo Christian God, its about religion in general. It explains religion from a philosophical and scientific perspective. God;the failed hypothesis is about God, not religion. The good book by AC Grayling is about secular humanist morals.
