Because he can't bear to live in a world where ways of thinking that are unlike his own are not only reasonable, but probably superior.

I have to add to what I wrote...you yourself "proved his existence" by demanding he prove it. You could not make such a demand unless you had already accepted his existence...it would be idiotic.
