Nit a narrow definition at all; Ib fact my view considers a very broad diversity of atheists, as there us a broad diversity of beliefs in any religion, such ae the diversity of sects in Christianity some denying they are religions.

A religion can belief in any ;belief system regardless of whether they believe in God(s) or not. Various sects of Buddhism particularly Zen
do not believe in God(s). Though a number of churches and other seocts of religions that are obvious religions or churches claim that they ar not religions or churches.

Yes Zen Buddhists are mostly atheists.
So you consider atheism a religion because some Zen Buddhists are not theists, I see.

No. I don't have a religion.
I did though grow up around buddhism
and might qualify as a jack- buddhist.

Calling atheism a belief system or a religion
is indulging in silly equivocation.

It is freakishly bizarre and arrogant that many people regardless of their religious beliefs calim their belief is not a religion regardless of whether they believe in God(s) or not, The word religion becomes poisoned scapegoat word people avoid because of a personal agenda that the consider themselves somehow superior above the others that believe in a religion,

something.

Keep it up, you get more fanciful
and absurd with each post.

So there are people that are non religious, is that what you are saying? Would any be atheists by any chance? I ask because you doubled down on atheists being Zen Buddhists.

I doubled down,. because being atheist does not mean one is not religious. Non=religious is an oxymoron using the word religion as a scapegoat with an agenda. Everyone believes in something even it it is the lack of something.

Circuit court created legal definition of religion, atheism

Although a judicially generated legal definition of atheism may not be easily forthcoming, the Seventh Circuit — like other courts — has at least proffered a definition of religion that includes atheism.

According to the Kaufman court, “when a person sincerely holds beliefs dealing with issues of ‘ultimate concern that for her occupy a place parallel to that filled by ... God in traditionally religious persons, those beliefs represent her religion.”

In short, the courts have held that the establishment clause is equally applicable to the nonreligious and even the anti-religious. As the 7th Circuit stated, “[A]theism may be considered, [only] in this special sense, a religion.”

It will be helpful to define religion before we attempt to classify any belief system, such as atheism, as a religion. These definitions come from dictionary.com:

1. A set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, especially when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.

2. A specific fundamental set of beliefs and practices generally agreed upon by a number of persons or sects.

3. The body of persons adhering to a particular set of beliefs and practices.

4. The practice of religious beliefs; ritual observance of faith.

5. Something one believes in and follows devotedly; a point or matter of ethics or conscience.

According to these definitions, atheism can indeed be considered a religion.

Being atheist does not mean that one is religious, in fact in most cases atheists are non religious.

As far as "non-religious is an oxymoron using the word religion as a scapegoat with an agenda" goes, you'll have to explain that one, that one went right by me.

Also, "Everyone believes in something even it it is the lack of something," you'll have to explain that too, that one is definitely an oxymoron. I don't know how believing in something is the same as a lack of belief.

According to those definitions, I fail to see how atheism can be considered a religion. Atheists by definition reject number 1. Number 2 is ruled out, 3, nope, 4, gotta be kidding, 5, not a chance.

I don't agree with your interpretation of these claims about atheism. Atheism is not a belief system. It has no "devotional and ritual observances". There is no particular moral code associated with atheism. It is a rejection of a particular belief, not a set of beliefs and practices agreed upon by a number of persons or sects. There is no atheist "creed". It is associated with no particular set of beliefs and practices or rituals of any kind. It is not an "observance of faith" any more than any belief about the status quo. People don't "believe in" atheism, because it is merely a rejection of a particular belief, however one arrives at that rejection. But, of course, your web site wanted to promote the idea that atheism could be categorized as a religion rather than just an opinion about the truth of a particular religious claim.

This is a bit of a stretch. An atheist can be religious; there are nontheistic religious traditions. But atheism itself is just a position in relation to a single question.

Does a lion, whale or spider have baggage also?
All life does, but it just so happens that humans evolved the ability to pass on information, and learn, because of speech and symbolic language. Without such you would never have been indoctrinated into your religious beliefs and not have the belief as to how close we actually are to all other life.

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
Atheism is a position on a religious subject. It's a position against.
It's really a response made to the question of an existing god posed and started by theists, who one fine day, decided to question their atheism. :0)
