Atheists Will go to Heaven?

Was the Pope wrong about atheists getting into heaven?...

I think it is interesting question, do people trust more to Pope than to Jesus/Bible who says:

These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.
Mat. 25:46

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 6:23

Maybe atheist could be righteous, but if he is not, then according to the Bible, he doesn’t get eternal life. I believe there are many atheists that are more righteous than Pope.

Was the Pope wrong about atheists getting into heaven?

More recently (April 15th, 2018) Pope Francis claimed that atheists get to Heaven, thus reinforcing the impression that his opinions on the afterlife are somewhat clumsy when compared to standard biblical views. Both statements, in fact, have to do with the eternal destiny of people, the former suggesting the prospect of annihilation (i.e. the waning away of the soul) and the latter implying a form of universalism (i.e. all will ultimately be saved regardless of their faith in Christ).

I can't think of any reason a loving God would deny eternal life to atheists that want it.

In my opinion.

You are making a post hoc fallacy there. If you are going to use the Bible as sources for the rules surrounding who gets to go into heaven, you must also use the Bible to define what is a righteous person. You can't just assume that righteousness is whatever you believe is good. Most modern people have no problem with diversity of views when it comes to faith and assess righteousness by looking to the pro-social behavior of people, setting the bar relatively low, about at their level in most cases, to declare a person "good" and thus "righteousness enough for heaven". That's a very weak theological reasoning. The Bible wasn't written by modern people and it's debatable to say it was designed to appeal to the morality and sooth the anxiety of the average person of the 4th century AD.

Depends who's perspective your question would be answered from.

The Bible clearly says that the return of Christ would mean all who dont believe in Jesus will be killed. And of course, others.

I figured Jesus was needed for those unable to answer for their own sins.
I'll be happy to represent myself before God.

What if punishment is eternal until the time they choose to be righteous?
And sin is death until a person stops sinning?

Maybe "death" and "eternal punishment" are more metaphorical terms.

They said. They will be in heaven while me (and my kids and family) will burn in hell. Not sure i want to go anywhere that lets that type of person in.

According to them, I and my family will go, too.

How about we bring some goodies and all have a real good cook out? Lets make a fun time of this.

He's half right, since there is no such place as hell. But they are not not active, their souls are in a state of hibernation until their next incarnation. The reincarnation process can be thought of as a karmic process that continues until true understanding of what and who they really are is realized and thus salvation.

It's a trap. No self respecting atheist wants to be doomed to living in church forever and ever.
