Athiests at a religious forum

So, I've been seeing a lot of threads started by atheists that essentially assert that atheism is right and everyone else is wrong.

So, atheists, why do you come to a forum full of religious people that you're not going to convince to give up their belief in God(s) or whatever they believe in? Are you here to learn about theistic beliefs, or are you just here to proselytize your atheism and tell theists that they're stupid?

What an original thread idea! :D

I don't think most atheists realize proselytization in their questions.

Edit: "Realization" - the verb, "to make real." We "make real" proselytization when it is our intent and effective outcome. I don't think the questions atheists ask realize that intent or outcome.

Both. In my own experience I've gotten a few people I've spoken to to dump their religion altogether after asking them a few questions, then researching it themselves. Most were catholics.

I don't think theists are stupid. I just want to understand how they justify their theism and if they don't justify it; why they believe it.

I can see why trying to understand why someone would believe something without justification (if that's what they answer; that it's not justified) would look like proselytization. I'm not here to tell people what they should or shouldn't believe though; just asking why they do to see if I can understand.

as an Athiest I could care less if you convert. I am here to learn more and get different ideas about religion and where we came from. You can't have religion without athiesm anyways.....

Remember, despite the URL, this is a religious education forum. There's no reason for the non-religious shouldn't be here if they want to learn.

Yeah, so why would they not welcome the Atheist???

Oh because they don't like it when their beliefs are actually questioned......

Because debating is fun. It can also be invigorating and practical. It stimulates the mind and hones articulative skills. It forces claimants to strive for clarity of thought and presentation. And it forces respondents to practice critical thinking and concise rebuttal.

Statement and counterstatement. Protagonist and Antagonist. These are elements of thought, of deliberation, of discernment, of revelation, of life.

Besides, for me personally, I get tired of losing every single argument to my girlfriend, so I come here to maybe get at least ONE win every couple months or so.

When are we getting married? Can I pretend you're Colbert?

For you, I'd even wear the mask and a patented Stephen Colbert tuxedo. As a matter of fact, that's what I'm planning for halloween.

I thought you were still mad at me though? Am I forgiven now?

I think you clicked the wrong button. Clearly you meant to express your undying love for me, but that post makes it look like it's directed at Eliot Wild. :sarcastic

You do realize that 90% of the threads on these forums aren't really debates, don't you? :)

I'm glad they are here because I like pointing out their errors and irrationality. I can't proselitize so that is the next best thing. :D

How ironic, I too enjoy letting people of faith know how ridiculous they seem at times......;)

For my rebuttal to the above, I state for the record that I completely disagree with your position. Therefore you are the Protagonist in this particlar argument and I will be the 'Antagonist'. Pro and Con.

And further for the record, you should form your argumentative proposition as follows: "Resolved: 90% of the threads on these forums aren't really debates." And then, you see, I argue for the other side.

Seriously, I will agree with you on this one . . . but, then again, that's why I only visit 10% of the threads on this forum.

Really? I've not seen very many threads like that. There are a lot of challenges to specific aspects of some religious beliefs but I'm not convinced that's the same thing. I certainly don't see any more of atheists asserting they're right and everyone else is wrong than I do of theists saying the same thing.

There are some atheists like that but I'm not claiming lack of belief in gods is any protection from stupidity.

So, atheists, why do you come to a forum full of religious people that you're not going to convince to give up their belief in God(s) or whatever they believe in? Are you here to learn about theistic beliefs, or are you just here to proselytize your atheism and tell theists that they're stupid?
I found these boards looking for somewhere to discuss religion because it is one of the most influential factors in human society yet one of the most misunderstood and misrepresented (by proponents and opponents).

I'm not here to proselytise atheism because I think that's impossible. I don't think anyone can choose to change their beliefs. What people can change is how they act upon those beliefs and that is what I try to get people (atheists, theists and those who aren't sure) to think about. If anything, I guess I could be said to be proselytising agnosticism. I'm not trying very hard though. I'm more interested in what people do rather than what they think.

This is a debate forum right? I mean last time I checked it was a debate forum. Are not you suppose to debate at a debate forums? And at a religious debate forum, don't you debate religious things? Are you telling, it is OK to debate every point of view expect that of the atheist?

Here is a brilliant idea: If you see something that is proselytizing report it and let the staff do their job.
